Pioneer Day is an official holiday celebrated in the U.S. state of Utah, with some celebrations in regions of surrounding states originally settled by Mormon pioneers. In 1938, Pioneer Day was celebrated on July 23 in Ocean Park, a neighborhood of Santa Monica. It was organized under the auspices of the society, California Daughters of Pioneers, and the presidents of five Southland Mormon stakes, and directed by General Chairman O. H. Hewlett. The day was spent in speeches, picnicking and reunion.
