Description:
Born in Hilo, Hawaii on Aug. 16, 1899. Ada May Sharpless was raised in Santa Ana, CA and graduated from USC. Her art studies began in Los Angeles at Otis Art Institute and continued in Paris in the late 1920s with Antoine Bourdelle. She was active in Los Angeles until the early 1940s. Sharpless' work can also be found at General Hospital (L.A. County-USC Medical Center) and at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana.

At a mural exhibition at the Los Angeles Central Library, artist Leo Katz points to an area of a cartoon drawing for the Frank Wiggins Trade School mural, Los Angeles, 1934

Description:
The cartoon drawing depicts a area of a multi-panel mural for the Frank Wiggins Trade School (now LA Trade Tech) in Los Angeles. The theme of the mural program is the history of the uses of tools serving the creative and destructive passions of man within the context of the Toltec and Aztec cultures. After completion, the mural immediately became controversial especially because of the depictions of nudity and references to war in the central panel. The central panel was removed from the trade school lobby and returned to the Public Works Administration in 1935 and the other two panels were returned in 1939.

Atanas Katchmakoff, sculptor, with his bronze Madonna sculpture, Los Angeles, 1935

Another photograph of Atanas Katchmakoff, with this sculpture, with his attorney Saul Ruskin, and art expert Dr. Ernest L. Tross appears in a Los Angeles Times article on 4/17/1935 titled: "Worth of Statue Debated: Value of Lost Madonna Estimated in Cost Case." At this time Katchmakoff sued Fred Keeler, the owner of the foundry that cast his Madonna sculpture for losing the plaster original. Two bronze sculptures had been made, but the owner of the bronze Madonnas had refused to allow his bronzes to be used to produce a new plaster cast.

Description:
Charles Kassler Jr. was a painter, printmaker, and lithographer. He lost a hand during a high school chemistry experiment. He studied art and architecture at Princeton University and the Chicago Art Institute. From 1925 to 1932 Kassler continued his studies while living at various times in New Mexico, Europe, and North Africa. While in France he apprenticed himself to a well-known fresco painter. He was active in Denver before moving to Los Angeles in 1933. He painted murals for the Federal Art Project and was an instructor at the Chouinard Art School (1933-34) and School of Design in Pasadena (1939).
