The radio program begins by greeting the listeners, then they play two native songs from the Altiplano region. Consecutively, Cipriana Apaza Mamani tells the story of Túpac Katari, providing listeners with biographical data and his leadership towards indigenous peoples. Midwives' practices in childbirth - interview with a young woman - 001

Description:: SPANISH: Una mujer joven de 21 años, describe a Juan de Dios Yapita y Denise Y. Arnold su embarazo, su parto y sus cuidados. Ella cuenta que durante su embarazo aun asistió a la escuela, y seguía pasando educación física donde realizaba los ejercicios que el profesor les indicaba. Comenta que se dio cuenta que estaba embarazada (usuri) cuando le daba asco algunos alimentos como el fideo y el arroz. Cuenta que su embarazo fue accidental, que su pareja era estudiante de secundaria y ella de primaria. Explica que ella seguía realizando sus trabajos cotidianos con la intención de abortar de manera espontánea, y que escuchaba decir que los mates de ortiga (atapillu) eran abortivos. Durante el trabajo de parto (usuyasiña) su mamá fue quién le ayudó dándole a beber mate de orégano y grasa de víbora (katari) para que su trabajo de parto fuera más fácil. Durante el parto comenta que ella se desmayó por un lapso de media hora en que su mamá le realizo la técnica del masajeado (qaquri). Luego de revivir, le dieron a beber café y chocolate. Cuenta que su bebé (wawa) fue recibido en una manta o awayu y que le dieron a beber un poco de vino y después de un día le dio de lactar, y fue bañado con agua de rosas. Cuenta sobre el nacimiento de la placenta, que es igual que el parto, y que se debe enterrar en la puerta. Explica sobre el cuidado de la fontanela (phuju) del recién nacido. Habla sobre los cuidados que tuvo para no tener sobreparto, por ejemplo, de no tocar agua. Y habla sobre las causas de la muerte durante el parto, las creencias sobre el nacimiento de los mellizos, y acerca del centro de salud. ENGLISH: A 21-year-old young woman describes to Juan de Dios Yapita and Denise Y. Arnold her pregnancy, delivery and care. She recounts that during her pregnancy she still attended school, and she continued to pass physical education where she did the exercises that the teacher indicated. She comments that she found out that she was pregnant (usuri) when she was disgusted by some foods like noodles and rice. She says that her pregnancy was accidental, that her partner was a high school student and she was in elementary school. She explains that she continued doing her daily work with the intention of aborting spontaneously, and that she heard that nettle tea (atapillu) was an abortifacient. During her labor (usuyasiña) her mother was the one who helped her by giving her drink mate of oregano and snake fat (katari) so that her labor would be easier. During the delivery, she comments that she fainted for a period of half an hour when her mother performed the massage technique (qaquri). After reviving her, she was given coffee and chocolate to drink. She tells that her baby (wawa) was received in a blanket or awayu and that they gave her a little wine to drink and after a day she nursed him, and he was bathed with rose water. She talks about the birth of the placenta, which is like a childbirth, and that the placenta must be buried at the house door. She explains about the care of the fontanel (phuju) of the newborn. She tells about the care she took to avoid giving birth, for example, not to touch water. And she talks about the causes of death during childbirth, the beliefs about the birth of twins, and about the health center.

Description:: SPANISH: Enrique Espejo Sepera guía a Juan de Dios Yapita y Denise Y. Arnold en un viaje a la montaña de Jujchu. Llegan a Yanamani donde encuentran casas de paja, un corral de llamas y a las 9 de la mañana la gente allá empieza a sacar a sus animales para pastar. Sus patios son bien construidos. En el camino ellos ven zorros (liq’uchi, sirka, anu o atuja). Descansan (sañama) en K’ultamaya y luego llegan a Jisk'a K’ultamaya donde hay casas construidas de piedra. Pasan por Jujchu Pallqa, un lugar donde hay una muralla de piedra construida por los diferentes ayllus para que no se escape los animales de rebaño (uywa). Llegan a las alturas de la montaña Jujchu, donde las madres (mamalas) y padres (tatalas) realizan libaciones o ch’alla. Se menciona que esta montaña también lo llaman Jujchu Niña María, y es considerada una mujer principal (t’alla), de donde viene el agua. Desde cerca de la cima ellos observan un rebaño de llamas (qarwa) y don Enrique comenta que se les nombra a las llamas según el tipo de color (samiri) de su fibra y el patrón de los colores en su cuerpo, por ejemplo si es un color pixeleado (tiwtira), o una llama manchada en el lomo (wankhalli), o del color de un ganso andino (wallata), o el color de la gaviota andina (qiñwachu), entre otros colores. They arrive at Yanamani where they find straw houses, a corral for llamas and at 9 in the morning the people there begin to take out their animals to graze. Their patios are well built. Along the way they see foxes (liq'uchi, sirka, anu or atuja). They rest (sañama) in K'ultamaya and then arrive at Jiska K'ultamaya where there are houses built of stone. They go through Jujchu Pallqa, a place where there is a stone wall built by the different ayllus so that the herd animals (uywa) do not escape. They arrive on the slopes of Mount Jujchu, where both women (mamalas) and men (tatalas) perform libations or ch'alla. Don Enrique mentioned that this mountain is also called Jujchu Girl María, and it is considered an outstanding woman (t'alla) where the water comes out from. From high up they observe the herds of llamas (qarwa) and don Enrique comments that the llamas are named according to the patterns of color of the fiber on their body, thought to come from the stone breath spirits (samiri) on the hillsides, for example a pixelated color (tiwtira), a llama spotted on the back (wankhalli), one like an Andean goose color (wallata), or an Andean seagull color (qiñwachu), among others.

Description:: SPANISH: Enrique Espejo Sepera guía a Juan de Dios Yapita y Denise Y. Arnold a las colinas de Qaqachaka para mostrarle las illas llamada Aywir Qala o "Piedras que Andan", donde se realizan ritos. En el camino va describiendo el paisaje, y la flora y la fauna del lugar. Ellos ven una flor de cacto con semilla de color carmín (ayrampu), un arbusto espinoso (kayñi ch'api) y la flor para lavar (t’axa t’axa) que cumple la función del jabón. Al llegar a las colinas, ellos encuentran el Aywiri Qala, y acullican coca (akhulliña) allí. Don Enrique explica que es un lugar donde se realizan libaciones durante la fiesta de carnaval y que el sábado después de la fiesta de comadres, bailan y cantan. También menciona que en el mes de agosto dan ofrendas en este lugar. Comenta que cada estancia tiene su propio cerro guardián menor (awatiri). Las ofrendas que se deben dar (chillaña) son maíz blanco, canela, azúcar, palillo y un feto de llama (sullu qallu) como una manera de invitarles su comida. ENGLISH: Enrique Espejo Sepera guides Juan de Dios Yapita and Denise Y. Arnold to the hills of Qaqachaka to show them the stone illas called Aywir Qala, "Stones that Move", where rituals are performed. Along the way he describes the landscape, and the flora and fauna of the place. They see a cactus flower with carmine-colored seeds (ayrampu), a thorny bush (kayñi ch'api), and the flower used for washing (t'axa t'axa) that performs the function of soap. Upon reaching the hills, they find the Aywiri Qala, and they chew coca (akhulliña) there. Don Enrique explains that libations are made in that place during Carnival and that on the Saturday, after the feast of Comadres, they dance and sing. He mentions that in the month of August they make offerings in this place. He comments that each hamlet has its minor guardian mountain (awatiri). The offerings given (chillaña) are white corn, cinnamon, sugar, tumeric, and a llama fetus (sullu qallu) as a way to invite them with food.

Arnold es de cuando ellos formaban parte de la inauguración de la Feria Anual realizada en el núcleo escolar del ayllu de Livichuco por el Comité de Feria, en que participan el plantel docente de la unidad educativa, los estudiantes, las autoridades de la comunidad y los padres de familia. La inauguración se da el 2 de agosto, cuando se homenajea al Día del Indio. Durante la apertura, dan la palabra el dirigente principal de Livichuco. También toma la palabra el profesor Samuel Gisbert, quien comenta que es muy importante realizar la feria y mostrar el trabajo que van realizando, sobre todo las mujeres y las artesanías que van elaborando, por lo que es indispensable la participación de los hombres (chachanaka), mujeres (warminaka) y niños (wawanaka). Juan de Dios Yapita habla sobre la economía de antes (layra timpu), del trueque (turkasiña) cuando no había dinero (qullqi), que es parte de la historia de las comunidades. The son-in-law (tullqa) is in charge of making prayers for the souls, and carries on his back the stepped altar, called tumpulu, to receive the offerings for the souls. On the other hand, she indicates the existence of Damned Ones, those who do not reach God and walk aimlessly on Earth. 2. She then describes the genealogy of the Arias family, indicating that they are a large family and that they have become related to other families with the surnames Choque, Bautista and Ochoa. She also mentions the valley land they own in Chhullunkiri and T'ajsuta, in addition to several hamlets. 3. The Qaqachaka authorities and the participation of their wives in the activities they assume. She names the Alcalde Mayor, considered the older brother (jach'a jiliri), the Corregidor, the Ayllu Leader (Jilanqu), the Registrar and the Mayordomos (Awatiri), divided into Marka, Kapitana, Ch'uri, Piskala, Candelaria and Animasa, although the latter has been lost with time. She mentions that the Mayor and the Corregidor spend a whole year in office, whereas the leaders of each ayllu (Jilanqu) and the Mayordomos spend this office for only half a year. They and their wives (warmi) must wear the clothing of authority throughout their tenure; if they do not, it is considered bad luck and frowned upon by the community. Among the activities of the Mayor is that of resolving conflicts and his wife, called Mayor Mamala, also participates as a mediator. To be named an authority, the person must be married (parisa paluma), not single (ch'ulla). However, to assume the position of postilion or school mayor it is not necessary to be married, and women can assume this commitment to the community. 2. Then she clarifies some prayers read to her by Juan de Dios Yapita: a) They love God (Yusaru munani); b) Mother Mary (Mama Mariya) y c) Awila Achachi.
