Description

An out-of-focus photograph of Mertie West standing on a sidewalk alongside Canal Street in New Orleans. The camera looks northwest down Canal Street. A sidewalk spans the width of the bottom edge and stretches back towards the mid-ground, where it meets a side street. In the foreground at left, an awning hangs from the top edge. Along the right edge, a nearby storefront stretches straight back. Mertie West stands in the near distance at center. She stands near the curb and looks to the camera. Behind her, a street passes across the image. Several pedestrians cross the street. On the opposite side of the street, a block of buildings stands and stretches back into the distance. Signage for the building's near occupants reads, "Catherine SHOPS," and "[...] & SON INC. WHOLESALE JEWELERS." At left, cars park along Canal Street. Canal Street enters frame from left and extends into the distance towards center. Buildings line the opposite side of Canal Street in the background at left. Large streaks of white flank the image on the lower left and lower right edges.
