Notes
- Description
- The Great Pagoda in the southeast corner of Kew Gardens (The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew). The pagoda was designed by Sir William Chambers in imitation of the Chinese pagodas. It was erected in 1762 and features ten octagonal storeys, the roofs of which were originally adorned with ceramic tiles and large dragons. The wooden dragons have since rotted away. During WWII, a hole was cut in each floor of the pagoda to allow for drop-testing of model bombs. Kew Gardens spans 121 hectares and serves as a research facility as well as a visitor attraction.
