- Hugh MacBeth was a Harvard graduate who became part of the first generation of African American lawyers in Los Angeles. With Willis O. Tyler, McBeth helped to organize the Barristers Club as an alternative to the State Bar, which at the time excluded African Americans, Jews, and other ethnic groups.
