- Summary
-
Lionel Leo Hampton was an American jazz vibraphonist, pianist, percussionist, bandleader and actor.
Nelson Creswell was the owner of the Cress Bar in 1947, was known as a fastidious dresser and was frequently mentioned in social reporting in the Los Angeles Sentinel. According to Walter Gordon, Jr., he was known as someone who occasionally sold goods door to door, and who never squealed on anyone as to where they got something.
Sam Taylor was a chauffeur (for Duke Ellington, among others), "sportsman," and proprietor of the club Sam's Place. - Description
-
The woman on the left is identified as "(Barrow) Joe's Lewis sister". Two sisters of Jow Lewis are identified as Eulala Barrow and Bunis Barrow (a mistake; she was named Vunies; later Vunis High) in the 1930 Census.
All information concerning the content and description of the image was provided by Walter Gordon.
The three men in this photo, left to right: Sam Taylor, Nelson Creswell, and Lionel Hampton. The women in this photograph are unidentified, most likely waitresses in local clubs. The woman on the far left, wearing the "Sam Taylor" sash, is possibly the sister of boxer Joe Louis.
