- Monte Hawley was one of the most successful African American actors of his time. He got his start in Chicago with the Lafayette Players. From there he moved to New York, where he was a successful stage actor before moving to Hollywood where he found work in motion pictures. Hawley was born in Chicago in 1901, and died in New York City in 1950.
