BayBio Endorses Proposition 71

Regional Bioscience Industry Association Declares Its Support for Stem Cell Initiative

South San Francisco, CA October 29th, 2004 -- BayBio, the Northern California bioscience industry association, announced today that it is endorsing Proposition 71, the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative. “BayBio supports the Proposition and the long term benefits we think California will receive,” said Matt Gardner, President of BayBio. “We see Proposition 71 as a strong, positive signal to the world that California intends to remain in the lead on biomedical research.”

A group of BayBio members deliberated for several months on the initiative, and engaged in a detailed analysis of the possible outcomes. The proponents of Proposition 71, the Coalition for Stem Cell Research and Cures, participated in a dialogue with BayBio on the prospective solutions offered by the initiative.

“We have to credit our membership,” added Gardner. “This is not something we rushed into. Our members asked tough questions and offered very specific challenges to the Coalition. As a result, we are confident the Coalition is committed to sound governance, minimum bureaucracy, and responsible use of public funds to advance the frontiers of biomedical research.

“We expect that a ‘yes’ vote on Proposition 71 will lead to increased investment in California research and will keep California on the leading edge of life sciences research worldwide,” Gardner said.
