Angelides Voices Strong Support For The California Stem Cell Research And Cures Initiative
Bond Sale Will Save Lives While Investing in California’s Future
SACRAMENTO, CA – California State Treasurer Phil Angelides today endorsed the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative, lauding the measure as a forward- thinking investment in California’s future that will improve and save millions of lives; build Californian’s economy; and reduce rapidly rising healthcare costs.
“This initiative is a win-win for California – funding research into debilitating diseases while investing in the California economy to create thousands of new jobs in a groundbreaking field of medical research,” said Angelides. “This bond proposal represents a smart investment in California’s economy and meets the test of long-term fiscal responsibility.”
Over 125 million Americans – nearly half of all families – suffer from diseases that could be treated or cured by stem cell therapies. Stem cells have the potential to provide cures for diabetes, cancer, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, ALS, osteoporosis and spinal cord injuries, as well as generate healthy new tissues for burn victims and new neurons to treat neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
