Sample Letter from a Parent

Dear Editor -

As one of millions of parents with a child who suffers from a disease that could be cured with stem cells, I strongly support a YES on Proposition 71, the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative.

Stem cells have the potential to provide new treatments and cures for many diseases and injuries, including diabetes, cancer, heart disease, cystic fibrosis, Parkinson's and spinal cord injuries. But those new treatments and cures will only be found if scientists can move forward with the research that's needed.

Proposition 71 will help turn the hope for cures into reality, by supporting a major stem cell research effort at California hospitals, medical schools and universities.

I urge all Californians to join me in voting YES on Prop 71. It could save the lives of millions of children and adults, and it could save the life of someone you love.

Sample Letter about a Parent or Grandparent

Dear Editor -

Our parents' and grandparents' generations supported the research that found cures for diseases like polio, smallpox and tuberculosis. Those cures saved millions of lives and reduced our health care costs by billions of dollars.

Now, millions of us have parents or grandparents who suffer from diseases that can't be cured with existing medical treatments, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and diabetes. I am one of those people.

I believe we should do our part to find new cures those diseases by voting YES on Proposition 71, the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative. Prop 71 will support stem cell research that can provide cures for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, diabetes and over 60 other diseases.

Let's pass Prop 71, for our parents and grandparents – and for the future health of our children and grandchildren.

Sample Letter from a Doctor or Medical Researcher

Dear Editor -

As a doctor/medical researcher and a citizen of California, I strongly support a YES vote on Proposition 71, the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative.

Stem cell research has the potential to provide new treatments and cures for diseases and injuries that affect millions of Californians, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, sickle cell disease and spinal cord injuries.

Unfortunately, for years, the most promising areas of stem cell research have been blocked by politics. Prop 71 will break the political logjam by supporting a major stem cell research effort at California hospitals, medical schools and universities.

By leading to new treatments and cures, Prop 71 can save millions of lives and help reduce our state's skyrocketing health care costs. That's why a YES vote on 71 is endorsed by over 100 medical and patient organizations, and by taxpayer and business organizations.

Please join us in voting YES on 71.

Sample Letter Focusing on Economic Issues

Dear Editor -

Proposition 71 is needed to support stem cell research that can save the lives of millions of people who suffer from diseases like, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

And, contrary to what some misguided opponents claim, a recent study of Prop 71 by leading California economists shows that a YES vote on 71 also makes good economic sense. You can read this study by going to the Prop 71 web site at www.YESon71.com.

It concluded that, by making California a world leader in stem cell research, Prop 71 can generate up to 22,000 new jobs and $4.4 billion in new revenues for our state. In addition, by leading to new cures for diseases, 71 can reduce California’s health care costs by as much as $25 billion!

The bottom line is that we can save lives, boost our economy and reduce health care costs, by voting YES on 71.

Sample Letter Focusing on Ethical Issues

Dear Editor -
As someone who has strong religious and ethical values, I strongly support a YES vote on Proposition 71, the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative.

Contrary to what some misinformed opponents claim, Prop 71 totally prohibits any funding for cloning to create babies. It is totally focused on finding medical cures.

Prop 71 supports all types of stem cell research, including adult, cord blood and pluriopotent stem cell research. It includes strict ethical provisions to protect patent rights, safety and privacy. And, the research will be overseen by an Independent Citizen's Oversight Committee, guided by top medical experts and representatives of patient advocacy groups.

I urge voters to look read Prop 71 for themselves and get the facts, by going to the web site www.YESon71.com. And, I hope you will join me in voting YES on 71 – to support stem cell research that can save millions of lives.
