One of a series of photographs labeled 2890 P 1-5. All were shot from the same cliff toward the lighthouse building. Images labeled “2890 P 1-3” look to be from the 1930s. The building displays minimal signage and 1930s era automobiles are in view. Images labeled “2890 P 4-5” include 1940s era cars, while the building itself has accumulated more signage and is most similar to an additional photograph (No. 2902) of Caroline Bartlett taken at the same location, dated 1946.

Upper photo: view of a wide dirt road on the face of a cliff in Santa Monica's Palisades Park, 1910-1920. The road is at center and leads from the top of the cliffs at left down to the beach at right. It is lined with a rustic eucalyptus branch fence and several large plants. A tall rock formation can be seen towards the bottom of the road at right. The beach is visible in the distance at center and right. Several tall mountains form a range in the background.

Description:
Lee developed a simplified design which relied on the porthole motif to evoke the streamlined character of the great ocean liners of the era. Note on reverse: "Exterior, surfaced form concrete. Modern in appearance, it is three tones in color. The ribbed portion was created by casting concrete against corrugated forms."

Description:
Lee designed an unusual self-serve candy counter, which had a slot for customers to deposit 5c. Fluorescent lamps illuminate the plaster hood above the candy counter. The hood directs cool air from the air conditioning system over the candy, preventing chocolates from turning color.

Two strips of neon, one blue and one white, in the ceiling cove, illuminate the auditorium. Neon is on a dimmer, which creates a theatrical atmosphere as well as controlling the light during picture operation. Pairs of buxom nudes painted in shiny metallic paint fly along the wall toward the screen.
