Distant aerial view of campus and Westwood Village looking south from an unidentified aircraft. Photographed during the first academic year on the Westwood campus, only six structures were present: The Education Building (Moore Hall), Royce Hall, the Library (College Library, subsequently Powell Library), the Chemistry Building (Haines Hall), the Physics-Biology Building (Kinsey Hall, and subsequently the Humanities Building), and the Bridge.

Shortly after the Library's completion, Hoover gained access to the building's taller, northern dome, capturing this perspective on the rooftop cupolas and the west wing. Originally known simply as the Library, Powell Library was known as College Library prior to 1966.

Moving to Westwood campus - Group exiting the Library (Powell Library), 1929

Description:
May 31, 1929, a day that came to be known as "Moving Day," saw a caravan of more than 500 vehicles filled with students, moving boxes, furniture, and equipment make its way from Vermont Avenue to the new Westwood campus. Ernest C. Moore, Director of UCLA, declared the day a half-holiday, and the ROTC band accompanied the procession. In this photograph, students, faculty, and guests move between the Library (Powell Library) and Royce Hall (not pictured) across the unfinished Esplanade.

Students lined up on the Esplanade on their way into Royce Hall (not pictured). The Physics Biology Building (Humanities Building)--on left--and the Library (Powell Library)--on right--appear in the background. The Esplanade is more generally called Royce quadrangle and is known today as Dickson Plaza. Royce Hall was the center of activity during the mid-February registration for the "second half-year" (Feb. - June) of the first academic year on the new Westwood campus.

From L to R: Gimbel, philanthropist, Underwood, Assistant Comptroller, and a man identified by Hoover as Chas Dodd converse on the Esplanade with the Library (Powell Library) in the background. Known formally as the "Dedication of the New Campus and New Buildings of the University of California at Los Angeles", the event brought together regents, professors, students, alumni, and representatives of other educational institutions for four sessions held on March 27 and 28. [Note: Handwritten date in the margin is incorrect]
