Wright Saltus Ludington residence, view of the Lansdowne Hermes statue at end tree-bordered lawn, Montecito, 1931

Description:
The Ludington estate, also known as Val Verde, Dias Felices, the Henry Dater house, and the Dr. Warren Austin home was designed by the architect Bertram Grovenor Goodhue, constructed in 1918 and then purchased by Charles H. Ludington in 1924. His son, Wright Saltus Ludington (who inherited the estate in 1927 or 1930), engaged the landscape architect Lockwood de Forest to design the gardens in 1925. Retaining the geometry of Goodhue's design and much of the wilderness, Lockwood transformed the gardens over a period of twenty-three years.

Harold Bell Wright (May 4, 1872-May 24, 1944) , author, poses in Los Angeles. Wright was a novelist and playwright who worked in Hollywood. He wrote fifteen original screenplays and he sold five of his novels to moviemakers (1926-1941). Movies based on his novels include The Winning of Barbara Worth (1926) and The Shepherd of the Hills (1941). Wright died in La Jolla and was buried in San Diego.

Milliner Sonya Zaranof who brought a $150,000 suit against dancer Irene Castle McLaughlin for making defamatory comments against Zaranof and calling her hats "terrible" (specifically the type Zaranof is wearing in this picture). Zaranof said that her millinery business had suffered considerably since the comments. McLaughlin denied the charges.

Actress Gloria Swanson and Minnie Barton burn the mortgage to the Bide-A-Wee home for working mothers, Los Angeles, 1935

Description:
Gloria Swanson, silent film actress, holds the burning mortgage to the Bide-A-Wee home for women while Minnie Barton watches. Swanson helped Minnie Barton, home founder, pay the mortgage by sending $100 a month for several years. A group gathered to burn the mortgage in celebration of completing payment on the home set up by Barton to help working mothers. Also in attendance were Mary Brill, president of the Big Sister League, Superior Judge Georgia Bullock, Mrs. Robert Ladd Gifford, and Chief Davis. Minnie Barton was the second woman to join the Los Angeles Police Department and also founded the Barton Home for girls in 1917. Gloria Swanson was an actress best known for her role as Norma Desmond in the film Sunset Boulevard.
