Payne, and 15-year-old brother Robert in their Westwood mansion home. Payne turned himself in for the killings of four to five days after their deaths, at a Huntington Beach police station. When he turned himself in, detectives found on his person both a letter and a telegram addressed to his father Lucius Payne, a St. Louis businessman, confessing to the crime, apologizing for his actions, and explaning that he did not know what impulse it was that drove him to the murders. Although he was questioned repeatedly, no motive for the murders was ever discovered, save for what Payne termed a force stronger than himself that compelled him to commit the crimes.Payne was convicted of the two murders, but found to be insane at the time of the crimes. He was confined to psychiatric treatment at the Mendocino State Hospital at Talmadge, in Mendocino County, CA. His father stood by him throughout his trial and conviction.

Description:
Nathan O. Freedman (left) and Deputy District Attorney Arthur Veitch at one of two trials where ex-convict Peter Pianezzi is charged with a double murder. Freedman is Pianezzi's lawyer. Allegedly, Pianezzi shot gambler George (Les) Bruneman 16 times in a cafe, then fatally shot cafe employee Frank A. Greuzard when he tried to take down Pianezzi's license plate number. The murder, which occurred October 25, 1937 is thought to have been gang-related. Pianezzi's first trial ended with a hung jury, 9-3 for the acquittal of Pianezzi. In the second trial, Pianezzi received a life sentence for the murders. Later, at age 80, Pianezzi was pardoned based on innocence.

Other factors complicating the trial were the paternity of Doris and George Dazey's child, Doris Dazey's possible mental illness, and false testimonies from some of the witnesses. Dr. Dazey was ultimately acquitted of the crime.

May Lawrence (front center) and Mickey Ward (front right), wife of cowboy motion picture extra Jerome "Blackjack" Ward, who is on trial for the murder of fellow extra John Ainsworth Tyacke (Johnny Tyke) in Gower Gulch. Gower Gulch is the name given to the area near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Gower Street where film extras hang out waiting for work; many of the nearby studios produce westerns so often actual working cowboys come here to break into the film business. Ward entered a plea of not guilty based on self defense and temporary insanity. He was ultimately set free after many witnesses attested to Tyke's violent nature.

Dr. A.M. Wilkinson, vice crusader, testifies before the Los Angeles County Grand Jury, 1937

Description:
Dr. A.M. Wilkinson pictured in court, on the day of his testimony before Los Angeles County grand jury regarding an ongoing investigation into religious racketeering. During his testimony, Wilkinson admitted to accepting $4400 from "gambling czar" Guy McAfee. The money was used to pay outstanding bills incurred by "The Last Days of Pompeii" pageant, presented by the Federated Church Brotherhood, of which Wilkinson was chairman. In his testimony, Wilkinson avowed that the funds received from McAfee came without strings attached, and that he and the notorious gambler had prayed for an end to the latter’s gambling addiction. Wilkinson, who was a vice crusader, resigned from the Citizens' Independent Vice Investigating Committee following his testimony. However, his resignation was denied by several Committee members, who believed that accepting the funds should not affect Wilkinson's position on the Committee.

Ex-convict Peter Pianezzi (left) and his lawyer Nathan Freedman at one of two trials where Pianezzi is charged with the murders of gambler George (Les) Bruneman and Frank A. Greuzard. Allegedly, Pianezzi shot Bruneman 16 times in a cafe and then shot cafe employee Greuzard as he tried to take down the license plate of Pianezzi's car. The murder of Bruneman, which occurred on October 25, 1937, is thought to have been gang-related. The first trial ended with a hung jury, 9-3 for the acquittal of Pianezzi. In the second trial, Pianezzi received a life sentence for the murders. Later, at age 80, Pianezzi received a pardon based on innocence.

Dr. George K. Dazey and his third wife, Dorcas Dazey, at the trial in which Dr. Dazey is accused of murdering his second wife, actress Doris S. Dazey, in 1935. Doris Dazey's death was originally believed to be suicide by monoxide poisoning. However, witnesses claimed that Dr. Dazey had been boasting about committing the "perfect crime" and a night watchman testified to witnessing Dazey carry a woman's body from the house to the garage on the night of the murder. Other factors complicating the trial were the paternity of Doris and George Dazey's child, Doris Dazey's possible mental illness, and false testimonies from some of the witnesses. Dr. Dazey was ultimately acquitted of the crime.

The film showed Cook (right) re-enacting his murder of dancer Anya Sosoyeva, who he hit on the head with a 2x4. Cook willingly confessed to the murder, as well as the assaults of two other women, Delia Bogard and Myrtle Wagner. This was the first time sound motion pictures were used during a trial in California history. The trial was also considered very unusual because Cook never denied the murder, personally offer a not guilty plea, or put up any defense. Cook was sentenced to death and executed in the San Quentin gas chamber on January 31, 1941, at age 21

Wright was charged with the shooting deaths of his wife Evelyn and best friend John Kimmel, whom he claimed to have caught in an "inappropriate" embrace in the Wright home.Wright's defense team, led by famed Los Angeles defense attorney Jerry Giesler, argued that Wright was not guilty by reason of insanity. The jury found Wright guilty of two counts of manslaughter, and subsequently ruled that he had been insane at his sanity trial.
