The curved corner of the brick building lines the left edge of the image. The front of the building wraps around towards the right and faces right. Windows line all 4 visible floors at left. The entrance to the hotel stands at far right. It stands elevated from the driveway and is covered by an awning. A neon sign hanging from the the awning reads, "HOTEL." Photograph of the Marmion Hotel on Marmion Way, viewed at a distance. Marmion Way spans the image in the near distance. It is partially obscured by some shrubbery and low wooden posts. Beyond it stands a single-story building in partial view at left and the Marmion Hotel behind and to the right of it. The building at left extends beyond the left frame and curves to the right. A driveway beside it at right leads up a small incline towards the Marmion Hotel. A car drives past it towards the right. The Marmion Hotel is viewed at an angle from the side, facing right. The brick hotel stands 4-stories tall. Its left side faces the camera. A sign painted at the top of the building reads, "MARMION HOTEL." The left side of the building curves around to the front, which faces right. A small porch extends from the front of the building. Behind the hotel, a house stands up on hill in the distance.

Euclide Allard, 66, holding a piece of twine and a towel used by a burglar to tie up Allard in his hotel room, Los Angeles, February 16, 1940

66-year-old Euclide Allard holding a piece of twine and a towel that a burglar used to tie him up in his hotel room. Allard, in town from Massachusetts, was in his room working on race-horse charts when he heard a knock at the door. Upon answering, a “tough looking” man pressed a revolver into Allard’s stomach and demanded to know where he kept his money. The burglar then tied up Allard with twine and took $6950 from Allard’s coat pocket. Allard said that most of the stolen money had been won at the horse races and it appeared that the burglar had seen Allard at the track and followed him back to the hotel.
