The photograph was taken at a Christmas party for children attending Sunday school at Asbury United Methodist Church. This church was one of the early Methodist churches to integrate in 1950s Los Angeles.
Laguna Park was later re-named Ruben Salazar Park after the L.A. Times journalist Ruben Salazar who was killed at the August 29, 1970 Chicano Moratorium. The Moratorium took place at Laguna Park and extended into the community of East Los Angeles. Rosalio, Maria Rosalia, and Ricardo all attended the Moratorium.
