"Egyptian Barge" float in the Tournament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, 1926

Description:
The "Egyptian barge" float is canopied with vines and flowers and features Martha Meserole as Queen of the Rose Maidens. "South Pasadena" appears in floral letters on the side of a float with a verdant hill covered by an awning and with girls in costume seated in a bower at the end. This was the first entry for the city of South Pasadena.

"Elephant" float with a prince and princess in a howdah in the Tournament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, 1926

Description:
Float in the form of an Indian Elephant carrying child prince Randolph H. Bennett and princess Eloise McCarter in a howdah. The legs of the elephant moved to give the appearance of walking. Eight outwalkers costumed as turbaned slaves are not in the photograph. The float was entered by the city of Glendale.

"Hollywood Pioneers Animal Show" truck in the Loyalty Day Parade inaugurating Boys' Week, Los Angeles, 1926

Description:
"Boys' Week" was first held in New York City in 1920. By the mid 1920's it was held in 600 locations in 25 countries. By 1928 there were 3,000 events. In 1934 Boys’ Week officially be-came known as Youth Week. In 1936 it was renamed Boys’ and Girls’ Week. One of the features of Boys' Week was to have High School boys accompany adults around businesses, municipal offices and the like and then actually run them on the last day.

Float with floral sign reading "Chamber of Commerce" in the Tournament of Roses Parade. On each corner of the float is a pergola column surmounted by a floral bouquet. There is a large, open crown in the center and there are 5 women in costume and one male driver. The float was entered by the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce.

Stand collapse aftermath at Tournament of Roses parade, 1926

Description:
Rescue workers and official examine the aftermath of a stand collapse during the Tournament of Roses Festival parade on New Year's Day 1926 in Pasadena, California. The fatal collapse sent hundreds of parade watchers to the hospital and left at least four people dead. Hoover, who at the time was attending Pasadena Junior College, took this photograph of the recovery effort as curious onlookers were kept back by rows of men with outstretched arms. Hoover would go on to attend UCLA, where he became the official photographer for several publications and an unofficial chronicler of UCLA events.
