Firemen battled the flames for ten hours and dealt with high winds, which made the situation more dangerous

Man stands in front of the wreckage of Berth 153, a terminal in L.A. Harbor that was destroyed when the Markay, an oil tanker owned by the Keystone Tankship Corp., exploded in the wee hours of the morning. The fire was fed by leaking gasoline and threatened at least five terminals in the harbor. At least 22 were injured and 9, possibly 12, people were killed. Damage was estimated at $10,000,000.

Side view of a section of the St. Francis Dam, nicknamed "The Tombstone", after the dam collapsed on March 12, 1928. The resulting flood killed over 400 people, and was considered one of the worst civil engineering failures in American history. The dam collapse caused the second greatest loss of life in California history, second only to the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. The St. Francis dam was built between 1924 and 1926 in St. Francisquito Canyon, near present-day Santa Clarita. William Mulholland was the engineer behind the dam's construction, and the dam failed just hours after he had personally given it a safety inspection, effectively ending his career.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 47 and rescuers, carrying David Swaim on a stretcher after he suffered a minor heart attack on a hike in which the troop was marooned overnight in Arroyo Seco Canyon. The scouts became lost on their way back during a seven mile hike between Switzer's Camp and Oake Wilde. The troop lit matches to signal a rescue party of parents, deputy sheriffs, and county prisoners. All, including Swaim, survived the ordeal.

Description:
Fire fighters working to save a terminal in the L.A. Harbor which was threatened by flames when the Markay, an oil tanker owned by the Keystone Tankship Corp., exploded in the wee hours of the morning. The fire was fed by leaking gasoline and threatened at least five terminals in the harbor. At least 22 were injured and 9, possibly 12, people were killed. Damage was estimated at $10,000,000.

Description:
The St. Francis Dam was a 200-foot high concrete gravity-arch dam built between 1924 and 1926 in St. Francisquito Canyon (near present-day Castaic and Santa Clarita). The dam collapsed on March 12, 1928 at two and a half minutes before midnight. The resulting flood killed more than 600 residents plus an unknown number of itinerant farm workers camped in San Francisquito Canyon, making it the 2nd greatest loss of life in California after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It is considered the worst American civil engineering failure in the 20th century.
