Tables extend horizontally across the image in rows that recede into the distance. They run at an upward angle from left to right. The tables are set; flatware and glasses reflect light. A central aisle extends through the mess hall on an angle from the right and back towards center. A few people in shadow walk along the aisle in the distance at center. Lights shine and streamers hang from the ceiling. A double door stands at the far end of the mess hall at center.

A tall box decorated for Christmas stands in the center of the image on a walkway leading to a house. The bottom third of the box is decorated with a brick print. Above the brick print and on the left side of the box it reads, "Christmas time." Mertie West's head and shoulders peek above the top of the box. She appears to stand behind the box and looks to camera. The front porch of a house stands behind her at left. Steps line the left edge of the image and the porch extends back and to the right. A neighboring house stands in the distance at right.
