Similar photographs of the same Marine training appear in the photo spread, "Camp Pendleton Makes Its Marines Tough," Los Angeles Times, 14 Apr. 1943: B
The camera looks across a lake at Camp Pendleton that stretches back on an angle to the left. At center, three rafts, occupied by 10 Marines each, sail across the water. They form a line as they sail to the right. The Marines in the boats hold oars to row and sit with their bayonets slung across their backs. All wear their combat uniforms and some even sport camouflage. Their convoy travels nearer to the far bank. A low hill rises from the far bank in the distance at right.
