Description:
View down Honolulu Avenue, strewn with mud and rocks after the October 17 flood. The walls of the grocery and the Auto Electrical buildings were pushed back by flood waters and mud. Beyond these buildings is the intersection at Orangedale Avenue, with more commercial buildings beyond with signs reading: "Gilmore Red Lion, Batteries, Service," "Shave 15¢, Haircut 24¢," and "5000 Hollywood, Automanx auto loans."

Description:
In November 1933, wildfires raged through the San Gabriel Mountains above the Crescenta Valley. Two floods followed the next year. In late December, a series of storms dropped 12 inches of rain. On New Year's Eve, heavy rains led to sporadic flooding. Around midnight, mountain hillsides collapsed sending millions of tons of mud into the Crescenta Valley neighborhoods below. More than 400 homes were destroyed in La Cañada, La Crescenta, Montrose and Tujunga. Scores of people were killed, and hundreds were left homeless. Another rainstorm on October 17 caused additional flooding and damage, but no deaths.

Dr. Raymond L. Carey holds a honeybee with a forceps, allowing it to sting the patient’s shoulder. Dr. Carey’s laboratory in Hollywood was one of a half dozen places in the world that used honeybee venom to treat arthritis. One of the causes of arthritis is a lack of oxidation which is stimulated by bee venom.

Home of William F. Gettle, kidnapping victim, Beverly Hills, 1934

Description:
Gettle was kidnapped from the grounds of his Arcadia ranch house during a party on the eve of May 9th. The kidnapping attracted a great deal of attention in the community, with Mrs. Gettle even addressing the kidnappers through the pages of the Los Angeles Times. The kidnappers demanded a $60,000 ransom for the return of Gettle, which Mrs. Gettle agreed to pay. However, before the ransom was paid, two detectives of the LAPD, Chester Burris and H.P. Gearhardt, broke the case after installing a dictaphone in the home of a bank robbery suspect. Information from the dictaphone led them to a La Crescenta home where Gettle was held. He was returned, unharmed, to his family on the eve of May 14th.

Description:
The home of Paul A. Wright, who is accused of the double murder of his wife, Evelyn, and best friend, John B. Kimmel. Wright confessed to shooting the pair after finding them in an embrace in his home. The trial that followed was named the "white flame" trial by the press and Wright was eventually let off on an insanity plea, thanks to his lawyer, Jerry Giesler

Louise Peete was convicted on Feb. 5, 1921 of first-degree murder in the death of Jacob Denton. She served 18 years in San Quentin before being released. In 1945 she was convicted of a second murder, this time of Margaret Logan, a wealthy woman who had supported Peete while she was in prison. For the second murder she was given the death penalty, and in 1947 became the second woman to be executed in California.
