Description:
Sarasvatī vīṇā Tanjore. L 52”. Named for Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge and the Arts. It is carved from a single piece of wood. It has twenty-one bronze fret bars (mettu) attached to the fingerboard (danda) in a beeswax mounting. Five strings are attached. It is highly decorated with white inlays. It does not appear to have a sound hole (nada randhra) in the soundboard. An extra resonator (sarrokai) is attached beneath the face of the dragon (yali).

Percussionists stand and a play tāsa shallow bowl drum (left) and a large ḍhol (center) while the dancers lie on their backs in two lines and play jhāñjh bronze cymbals, and lezim sticks with jingling cymbals loosely attached. The man closest to the drummers in the left line leads dancers by blowing a whistle and clapping.

Description:
Musician and teacher Babu Sherbande plays manjira (small bronze finger cymbals) for a song sung by his student, Nila Sewlinga Vaghmare. She plays a cawandga, a variable tension monochord whose string is attached to a wooden handle, and stretched and loosened by the left hand, while being plucked with the right-hand fingers. Bronze bells (ghanti) are attached to the bronze holder for the strap that is attached to the wooden cylindrical body, whose upper edge is rimmed in bronze, and whose bottom is covered by a thin leather membrane, through which the end of the string passes and is tied. Bronze jingles are attached to the wooden handle. Nila Vaghmare’s daughter, Ratna Shankar Vaghmare, sings along and plays a tuṇtuṇe, a plucked monochord with a horsehead peg and a wooden cylindrical resonator. The cawandga and tuṇtuṇe were made in the shop of Abdul Karim Ismail Saheb, sitar makers of Miraj.

Cawanda at the shop of Abdul Karim Ismail Saheb, Miraj (India), 1963

Description:
Cawandga, a variable tension monochord whose string is attached to a wooden handle, and stretched and loosened by the left hand, while being plucked with the right-hand fingers. Three bronze bells ghanti are attached to the bronze holder for the strap attached to the wooden cylindrical body, whose bottom is tightly covered by a thin leather membrane, through which the end of the string passes and is tied. Three bronze jingles are attached to the wooden handle. The instrument is said to have originated in the skull of the evil king Kartavirya Arjun, after he was beheaded by Lord Parasurama, son of Goddess Renuka/Yellamma. Devotees play the instrument in honor of Goddess Renuka-Yellamma and Lord Parasurama. The cawandga was made at the shop of Abdul Karim Ismail Saheb, sitar Makers of Miraj.

Description:
Twelve Banjara women dance (welcome song for marriage?) with raised arms, bedecked with white bangles. They wear large nose rings and elaborate necklaces. Their long cholīs (blouses), gāgrās (ankle-length full skirts), and oṛhnīs (shawl worn over head, one end tucked into waist) are decorated with needlework, coins, and mirror work. The headman Gajā, plays a daf / ḍapla (?) for their song. Other men had left for work in fields. Bañjārā homes are visible in the background. The village is 17 miles from Hyderabad.

Madurai Om Periyaswamy in costume for the a poikkal kuthirai aattam dance, wearing a “false leg horse” or "dummy-horse” costume, made of paper maché type material, elegantly caparisoned, and draped with South Indian block print textile skirt hiding the dancer’s bare feet. He wears a decorated red turban, blue silk kurta and golden jacket, flower garlands, and holds a wooden spear in his right hand. Conai, left, holds urumbi (urummi, uṟumi) double-headed variable tension membranophone with one curved stick in his right hand, and Venkatesan holds a tavil double-headed membranophone held in playing position with both sticks visible, and dancers, listen intently. Description:
Two dancers in costume for the karakāṭṭam “pot dance” folk and ritual dance of Tamilnadu. The dancers balance five pots stacked on their heads: a young woman balances an angel figure atop her pots, a young man (probably son of Om Periyaswamy) balances a parrot figure atop his pots. Musicians are led by Mukkasāmi, who dances as he plays sattakulai multiple-reed aerophone (cattak kuḻāy). Other instruments L-R are urumbi (urummi, uṟumi) double-headed variable tension membranophone played with two differently-curved sticks by Conai; small high-pitched membranophone, played with two sticks by a younger drummer in light blue shirt and white shawl; pambai double-headed membranophone pair played with two curved sticks by Kalidasa; and tavil double-headed membranophone played by Venkatesan. The pancu, hereditary trance medium, enters the stage of the trance ritual called manjal nirattam (bath+water+dance), when he will dip margoosa leaves into the boiling turmeric water and hold the soaked leaves on his head. Behind them, is a Kalari (Kalarippayattu) training center building decorated with a painting of a shield, dagger, and urumbi (urummi, uṟumi) whip/sword, and with two paintings of crossed katars (push daggers) on either side, above. A sign on the building reads “C.V.N. Kalari” ("Kalari" in Malayalam script). It is named for C. V. Narayanan Nair, founder of an organization based in Kozhikode, Ayamkudy.
