Description:
The Institut de Sauvegarde du Patrimoine National (ISPAN), founded in 1979, secured the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for the Palace of Sans-Souci and Citadelle Henri built in the early 19th century after Haiti’s independence from France. This digital collection includes documentation on archaeological explorations, architectural designs, research publications from Haitian scholars, and photographs concerning Haiti’s monuments, structures, and cultural and historical sites throughout Haiti.

Description:
The analysis of the building very quickly led to the need to stop the infiltration of rainwater which, by leaching the mortar, makes the masonry increasingly deficient and consequently threatens the structures, some of which are already heavily damaged by the earthquake. of earth of 1842. This caused numerous cracks in the building, especially in the Batterie Coidavid where we observe the collapse of numerous arches and lintels in the shear walls, partial collapses or subsidence of the vaults, as well as important cracks in the walls.

Central Courtyard of the Batterie Coidavid during the removal of vegetation

Description:
In 1932, and in 1950, major Works (sealing of breaches, laying of unreinforced concrete screeds on the terraces, etc.) saved the building from imminent ruin. Over the years, these low-thickness (5 to 10cm) unreinforced concrete screeds had lost their waterproofing capacity, the mass of clay, constituting the shielding of the lower vaults on which they rest, behaves like a sponge. The screeds crack and give way to rainwater infiltration (average annual precipitation of 3000 mm) which flows thru the masonry and stagnates at the lower level of the firing chambers. Thus maintaining a permanent humidity conducive to the development of cryptogamic vegetation.

Description:
The Royal Battery, the Officers' Quarters and the Outbuildings of the Governor's Palace form a coherent whole and constitute the only sector of the Citadel where, in the absence of period documents (plans, engravings, construction logs.), the traces of the original state are in sufficient quantity and quality to allow a historically accurate reconstruction. The set is, overall, made up of two lean-to roofs which are joined back-to-back and separated by a powerful ridge wall (B1/F4); one of these roofs covers the entire La Batterie Royale, the terrace of which constitutes a barbette battery; the other roof covers the Officers' Quarters and the outbuildings, while ensuring the structural balance of the first slope.

Description:
La Citadelle est non seulement l’élément majeur de l’ensemble architectural du Parc National Historique, mais aussi, pour l’haïtien d’aujourd’hui, le symbole de la liberté et de l’indépendance. Cette impressionnante fortification, en maçonnerie massive, occupe une superficie de près d’un hectare. Elle consiste schématiquement en un vaste quadrilatère irrégulier formé d’un ensemble de quatre corps de bâtiment enserrant la crête du Pic Laferrière, délimitant une cour centrale a deux niveaux, a partie desquels on accède à ces quatre corps de bâtiments. Ceux-ci s’étagent sur huit niveaux. Le plus élevé est celui de la Batterie de la Reine dont les murs culminent à 956 mètres d’altitude.

Work on extrados of the Batterie de la Reine

Description:
Les extrados sont un triangle de maçonnerie ajouté sur les voutes qui servent à charger les voutes pour les rendre plus solide et à évacuer les eaux de pluie. A ce titre l’étanchéité des extrados et des arases est un élément important de la mise hors d’eau de la Citadelle. La procédure du projet de restauration consistait à : enlever l’étanchéité défectueuse et la remplacer par une étanchéité multicouche a base de mortiers dont les mélanges ont été développés et expérimentés sur le site avec une couche finale de maçonnerie pour raisons esthétique.
