Loretta Yeagle, dressed as a queen, sits at the head of the float. Gordon Olsen is in period costume in a scene depicting the discovery of the land. In the front, next to a replica of the Cabrillo ship, are Dick Vivie and Patricia Tenney dressed as Native Americans.
Sacramento's Rose Parade entry features the California State Capitol building dome and a gold miner, John Hudson, overlooked by Robert Bleyle as Captain John A. Sutter. The side of the Float reads, "1939 SACRAMENTO GOLDEN EMPIRE CENTENNIAL 1893."
When descending a hill on Colorado Boulevard, Dr. Ross Company’s float sped down due to failed brakes. As it gathered momentum, the driver swerved around Eagle Rock’s entry. The crowd eventually caught the runaway float and slowed it down. Several people were injured from where the ponies guiding the float went into the crowd.
