Description:
Otto Peltzer, the world record holder at the 880 at the time, was particularly interested in running on the Coliseum track, which he praised as a fast track. Two months after this photograph was taken he ran against local racers and set a new Southern California record. During World War II, Peltzer was imprisoned by the Germans because was gay.

Description:
John Henry Kuck was an American athlete who won a gold medal in the shot put at the 1928 Summer Olympics setting a new world record at 15.87 m. Before the Olympics, as a student at Kansas State Teachers College (Emporia State University) he was the 1926 national collegiate champion and world record holder in both the shot put and javelin.

Lee Barnes pole vaulting at the Coliseum, Los Angeles, 1924-1928

Description:
Lee Barnes lands his jump into the sand pit below him. The pole he used to vault himself over the crossbar is centered between the standard bars. A man in a hat, with back facing the camera, moves to grab Barnes' vaulting pole. Another man stands to the left of the standard bars, with the number "20" on his sweater, watching Barnes land. Lee Barnes was a part of the track team at University of Southern California from 1924 to 1928. He won gold in pole vaulting at the Paris Olympics in 1924.

Description:
Lillian Copeland was an American athlete who excelled in weight throwing. She has been called "the most successful female discus thrower in U.S. history," and held multiple titles in shot put and javelin throwing as well. In the 1928 Olympics she won the silver medal for the discus throw and in 1932 she won the gold medal in this event.

USC and Oregon State football players chase down a loose ball, Los Angeles, circa 1928-1929

Description:
The camera looks across the Coliseum's field during a football game between USC and Oregon State. At center, No. 40 of the Oregon State Beavers runs towards the right with his head lifted and back to camera. Immediately behind him, a USC Trojan runs in the same direction. Farther behind them, another Trojan player runs towards the right as well. They appear to chase after a football that bounces off of the field to the right of them. Other than them, the field is empty and stretches into the distance. Vacant stadium stands extend across the background. At right a goalpost stands and the Coliseum's peristyle entrance juts into frame behind it.
