Description:: The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War was founded in 1885 as an organization dedicated to memorializing Civil War veterans. The organization is an auxiliary of the Grand Army of the Republic(G.A.R.). In 1938, the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Department of California and Nevada, dedicated a plaque to John W Grimes (Department Commander, Grand Army of the Republic), located in a garden at Palisades Park. That same year, a second plaque was dedicated at Long Beach Public Library by the Sons and Daughters of the Union Veterans of Civil War. Grimes was associated with G.A.R. Long Beach Post, No. 181.
