Description:
Photograph of visitors to Arlington National Cemetery standing on the grave site of Pierre Charles L'Enfant. A walkway enters frame from the bottom edge at right and stretches back towards center. It slices through the grassy lawn in front of the Lee Mansion (out-of-frame). At the end of the path and in the near distance at center, the grave site of Pierre Charles L'Enfant stands atop a hill. It is viewed at an angle. The tomb consists of a foundational slab at its base. Atop the foundation, a smaller, beveled slab rests. Six decorative posts rise from the beveled base and support another slab. Two couples stand atop the foundational base of the monument at the near left corner and the far right corner. The Washington, D.C. skyline is visible in the far distance. The Lincoln Memorial is barely visible to the left of the near couple and the Washington Monument rises beyond the tomb.

West stands in the near distance, left-of-center, and looks to the camera. Behind him, the marble, neoclassical Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stands. It is viewed from its southern face and stretches out-of-frame to the left. Three laurel wreaths are carved in relief on the side of the tomb. They are spaced and framed by 4 pilasters. Metal chains and posts surround the monument. A few other visitors mill about the terrace. One man stands in the near distance along the right edge with his back to the camera. A group of 3 people stand at the far end of the terrace at center. Trees line the background, cascading downward to the right.
