Description:
Helen Harper Coates was the Executive Secretary of the West Harlem Council of Social Agencies. In 1938, she married Edwin Coates, a pianist, composer and faculty member of the Martin-Smith School of Music, who graduated from the Institute of Musical Art (which later merged with the Juilliard Graduate School to form the Juilliard School).

Description:
Estevanico is known by several names, including Esteban de Dorantes, Estebanico, and Esteban the Moor, or Mustafa Zemmouri. Enslaved as a youth by the Portuguese, he was sold to a Spanish nobleman and taken in 1527 on the Spanish Narváez expedition to establish a colony in Florida. For eight years, he traveled with Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Andrés Dorantes de Carranza, and Alonso del Castillo Maldonado across northern New Spain (present-day U.S. Southwest and northern Mexico). They finally reached Spanish forces in Mexico City in 1536. Later Estevanico served as the main guide for a return expedition to the Southwest. Spaniards believe that he was killed in the Zuni city of Hawikuh in 1539. (Wikipedia).

Hotel and grain warehouse, Allensworth, 1908-1918

Description:
After his retirement from the military in 1906, Colonel Allen Allensworth founded the town of Allensworth in 1908, with the idea that African Americans could own property, learn, thrive, and live the American Dream. It was named by Lt. Colonel Allen Allensworth. It had a school system by 1910. With the death of Colonel Allensworth in 1914, the town experienced extreme losses, coupled with severe drought and decreased crop yields. Many residents left the area following World War I. The town was memorialized as a state park in 1974, and hosts events annually to preserve its history.

A group of African American men standing in front of the newly opened Magnolia Saloon, owned by Robert Stewart, located on the corner of New High and Marchessault Street in “Sonoratown”. All of the buildings lining the street are adobe or wood. A wagon is parked across New High Street near a laundry. Two large trees shade that side of the street near a picket fence. The J.W. Robinson Mansion is visible on the left overlooking Castelar and Bellevue (Sunset Boulevard).

He built the Somerville Hotel (1928), was instrumental in the founding of the Los Angeles chapter of NAACP (1914), and served on the Police Commission 1949-1953.

Description:
Printed map of the heart of Los Angeles with lines sketched in to show geographic distribution of African Americans, created sometime between 1923 and 1930. The map indicates dense African American populations along Jefferson Blvd, from Arlington to Vermont, and north of Slauson between Central Ave. and the Los Angeles River. This map was used to define what areas of the city to keep for white people to live in, and to block black migration. The practice was a way to prevent integration with African Americans based on the belief that when blacks move into white working class neighborhoods, the property values go down triggering urban blight. This exclusionary practice was known as “red lining”.

Marvin Hayes, 1944-1954

Description:
Marvin Hayes was an African American bass-baritone who performed in many styles of music from the Baroque to modern periods. He appeared as a soloist and as a chamber musician throughout the USA and Europe and he performed with major symphony orchestras. He lived his later years in Pacific Palisades and taught voice. He served on the faculty of Cal Arts from 1965 to 1979 and was a member of the Pomona College faculty from 1981 to 1995.

The Theme Building at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The airport was designed jointly by Paul R. Williams, Pereira & Luckman Associates, and Welton Becket & Associates. The Theme Building was probably not designed by Williams. It has an observation deck, restaurant (closed in 2013), employee cafeteria and a bank. It became an instant landmark in Los Angeles which symbolized the city’s embrace of the 20th century space age.

Ysidro Reyes, half-owner of Rancho Boca de Santa Monica and descendant of Juan Francisco Reyes, circa 1853-1861

Description:
Juan Francisco Reyes, was a mulatto settler from Mexico who arrived shortly after the original settlers of 1781. In 1784, he received the Spanish Crown’s land-grant for Rancho Los Encinos. After selling it back, he received the land grant for Lompoc. He became the first alcalde (mayor) of the Los Angeles pueblo in 1790.

Allen Allensworth was born into slavery in Kentucky, served as a Union soldier, became a Baptist minister and educator, and was the first African American to reach the rank of lieutenant colonel. He founded numerous churches, and in 1908 founded Allensworth, California, the only town in the state to be founded, financed and governed by African Americans, now a State Historic Monument. Noble Johnson, circa 1915

Description:
Noble Johnson was a character actor in cinema, one of the few African Americans in the field during the studio era. A childhood friend of Lon Chaney, Johnson followed him into the industry in 1915. He was an extra in D.W. Griffith’s Intolerance (1916) as a Babylonian soldier. Because of his large size 6'2″, 215 lbs., Johnson was often cast in key character roles representing not just African Americans, but Native Americans, Asians, Arabians, and Pacific Islanders. Johnson founded Lincoln Motion Picture Company, the first American studio that produced “race” films, pictures for African Americans, exclusively, from 1916 to 1923. He continued to work in the sound era, retiring at the age of 69.
