Dr. Vada Somerville (born Vada Jetmore Watson) of Pomona graduated from USC, married dentist John Alexander Somerville (1912), was the first African American woman and the second African American person to graduate from USC School of Dentistry (1918), and was the first African American woman certified to practice dentistry in the state of California. She was a civil rights activist, highly involved in several civic and community organizations.

Kenneth Hahn (1920–1997) was a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for forty years, from 1952 to 1992. Hahn was on the Los Angeles City Council from 1947 to 1952. He was an ardent supporter of civil rights throughout the 1960s, and met Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1961.

St. Andrews African Methodist Episcopal Church, Sacramento, 1916-1917

Description:
St. Andrews AME Church was founded in 1850. It was active in efforts to prevent runaway slaves from being returned to bondage. In 1855 and 1856 St. Andrews hosted two important “California Colored Citizens State Conventions,” where the state’s earliest black residents petitioned the Legislature for basic rights – the right to vote, to testify against whites in court and to send their children to public schools. It stands to this day as the oldest continuous African Methodist Episcopal (AME) congregation on the west coast.

Dr. John Somerville, born in Jamaica, was the first black graduate of USC School of Dentistry (1907). He married Vada Jetmore Watson (1912), who also became a dentist. He built the Somerville Hotel (1928), was instrumental in the founding of the Los Angeles chapter of NAACP (1914), and served on the Police Commission 1949-1953.

Santa Susana Pass, east side, Los Angeles County, circa 1895

Description:
The Santa Susana Pass is a low mountain pass in the Simi Hills of Southern California, connecting San Fernando Valley to Simi Valley. It was used by Native American tribes for around 8,000 years. Use by Europeans started with the Portola Expedition (1769-1770), by Franciscans to travel from the San Fernando Mission the San Buenaventura, and by San Fernando rancheros after 1834 secularization. A wagon trail was created, and, in 1917, a road was built.

Samuel John Booth, mason and successful gold prospector, British Columbia, 1880-1900

Description:
Samuel John Booth was a resident of Victoria, B.C., from c. 1858 to 1917. One of four black prospectors who formed a company to mine gold at Leechtown (Leech River) in 1864, he became quite prosperous. The regalia that he wears is probably American and may not even be masonic. It is not the style of regalia worn in the jurisdiction of British Columbia and there is no record of his membership in Grand Lodge records. There was also no masonic affiliation noted in his obituary. It is probable that he was a member of a Prince Hall lodge before he moved to Victoria. Description:
Chevalier de Saint-Georges was a champion fencer, classical composer, virtuoso violinist, and conductor of the leading symphony orchestra in Paris. Born in Guadeloupe, he was the son of George Bologne de Saint-Georges, a wealthy planter, and Nanon, his African slave. During the French Revolution, Saint-Georges was colonel of the Légion St.-Georges, the first all-black regiment in Europe, fighting on the side of the Republic. Today the Chevalier de Saint-Georges is best remembered as the first classical composer of African ancestry. [Wikipedia]

Sammy Davis Jr. was an African American singer, musician, dancer, actor, vaudevillian and comedian. He began his career in vaudeville at the age of 3 with his father, Sammy Davis Sr. and the Will Mastin Trio. Davis became an overnight sensation following a nightclub performance at Ciro's (in West Hollywood) after the 1951 Academy Awards.

Ruby Marie Offutt Wheeler, a daughter of Georgia Offutt, was a Los Angeles school teacher for 14 years. She appears as a student at the University of California in Los Angeles in the 1920 yearbook. A June 24, 1932 letter written to her by W. E. B. Du Bois, inviting her to provide her photograph for the "Education Number" of The Crisis Magazine, lists her address as the "University of Southern California." Description:
Gone Are the Days! Was a 1963 American comedy-drama film starring Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee and Godfrey Cambridge. It is based on the Broadway play Purlie Victorious, which was written by Davis. Purlie is set in an era when Jim Crow laws still were in effect in the American South. Its focus is on the dynamic, traveling preacher Purlie Victorious Judson, who returns to his small Georgia town hoping to save Big Bethel, the community's church, and emancipate the cotton pickers who work on oppressive Ol' Cap'n Cotchipee's plantation. With the assistance of Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins, Purlie hopes to pry loose from Cotchipee an inheritance due his long-lost cousin and use the money to achieve his goals.

Roland Hayes was an American lyric tenor and composer. In 1915 Hayes premiered in New York City in concerts presented by the orchestra leader Walter F. Craig. Hayes performed his own musical arrangements in recitals from 1916 to 1919, touring from coast to coast. He recorded with Columbia in 1939. Hayes continued to perform until the age of 85.

Description:
Robert James Boyd was born in North Carolina. He married Emma P. Barrett in Los Angeles and in 1910 they lived at 1242 El Molino (now 1242 Kenmore Ave.) in Los Angeles, next to 1244 El Molino, where Emma had lived with her family before she was married from as early as 1900. By 1917, he is reported as working in a barbershop in Riverside city directories from 1917 to 1947. According to Miriam Matthews, he owned the barbershop. Robert and Emma had four children: Barrett, Willis, Helen and Edward.
