View towards the Iconostasis (Iconostasion) and apse of Saint Sophia Cathedral with a painting of the Virgin Mary arms outstretched and a medalion icon of the Christ-child in front of her. She is represented here as the Queen of Heaven, ready to receive the faithful to the Gates of Heaven. Inscribed in Greek on the arch of the Sanctuary, the translation proclaims: "This is the Gate of Heaven." The painting is 33 feet in diameter and the face is 7 1/2 feet in diameter.
The mural was controversial especially because of the depictions of nudity and references to war in the central panel. The central panel was removed from the Frank Wiggins Trade School lobby (now LA Trade Tech) and returned to the Public Works Administration in 1935 and the other two panels were returned in 1939.
Don Dixon demonstrating his accordion playing skills to Judge William R. McKay to prove that he was not drunk when he rammed his car into a parked automobile outside his house, but rather tired after a long night of accordion playing at a wedding. President Herbert Hoover and Kiwanis President Charles E. Arnn attend a luncheon fundraiser for the Community Chest organization. The Community Chest were fund-raising organizations that collected money and distributed it to the local community for projects.
Fire fighting crews use a small bulldozer to clear brush after a fire in La Canada. The brush fire threatened four foothill communities including La Canada, Montrose, Glendale, and Flintridge. The crew saved many homes from the blaze, but several old cars were destroyed.
Captain David C. Morrison talking on his radio on the beach during the Army-Navy Maneuvers that took place off the coast of Southern California at the end of 1946. The goal of the war games was to practice two maneuvers: Operation Mountain Goat, an amphibious landing designed to dislodge "enemy" troops, and Operation Oilskin, a landing to cut off "enemy" communications. The Army, Navy, and Marine Corps aircrafts participated in the exercise.
