A photograph of Chief of Beverly Hills Police Charles C. Blair, District Attorney Buron Fitts, and lawyer Ernest E. Noon. The three men were involved in the search for kidnapping victim William F. Gettle and the prosecution of the kidnappers after Gettle's safe recovery.Charles C. Blair was the first Chief of Police of Beverly Hills, serving from 1927-1942. Ernest E. Noon was the attorney of the Gettle family. He was intimitely involved with the attempts to recover William F. Gettle, directing via the Los Angeles Times that the kidnappers send any ransom requests to him, as Mrs. Fleeta Gettle was ill with nervous prostration after the kidnapping of her husband and under medical supervision.Buron Fitts was the district attorney of Los Angeles from 1928-1940. Fitts was in charge of co-ordinating the police agencies in their search for Gettle and his kidnappers.

Beverly Hills home of William F. Gettle, kidnapping victim. May 1934.

Description:
Beverly Hills home of businessman and millionaire William F. Gettle, at 723 North Linden Drive. Gettle was kidnapped from the grounds of from his Arcadia ranch house during a party on the eve of May 9th. The kidnapping attracted a great deal of attention in the community, with Mrs. Gettle even addressing the kidnappers through the pages of the Los Angeles Times. The kidnappers demanded a $60,000 ransom for the return of Gettle, which Mrs. Gettle agreed to pay. However, before the ransom was paid, two detectives of the LAPD, Chester Burris and H.P. Gearhardt, broke the case after installing a dictaphone in the home of a bank robbery suspect. Information from the dictaphone led them to a La Crescenta home where Gettle was held. He was returned, unharmed, to his family on the eve of May 14th.

Description:
Memorial Day, also known as "Poppy Day", May 26, 1934. Pearl Lathrop, Marie Gore, and Emma Wolfegang, members of the Los Angeles American Legion Auxillary, hold bouquets of artificial poppies, made by veterans of the First World War. The poppies were sold by members of the American Legion Auxillary in order to raise money for disabled veterans and their families.Poppies were chosen as representative of Memorial Day due to their presence in the iconic World War I memorial poem, "In Flanders Fields". The poem was written by Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae.

Mrs. Zella Jeffers on the witness stand in the courtroom of Judge Charles W. Fricke. She is accused of performing immoral acts with her husband, Reverend Joseph Jeffers, in front of guests in their home. Mrs. Jeffers claimed that on the night of her arrest she was drugged by neighbor Vincent Higgins, a District Attorney’s detective, and didn’t remember the events that were supposed to have taken place. A film reviewed by the prosecution showed Reverend and Mrs. Jeffers disrobing in front of their guests. Behind Mrs. Jeffers is a floor plan of her home, which she described for the jury.

"Prince" Michael Romanoff, popular Hollywood pretender to Russian royal blood, Los Angeles, 1934 (?)

Description:
A photograph of "Prince" (not, as captioned here, "Grand Duke") Michael Romanoff, a Hollywood restaurateur and actor, who claimed to be a member of the Russian royal family. This claim was widely known to be false; however, Romanoff kept up the deception throughout his life in Los Angeles.Romanoff was born Hershel Geguzin in Lithuania. He traveled extensively before settling in Los Angeles and into the role of Michael Romanoff. In Hollywood, he acted on stage and in film, but was perhaps most successful as the owner of the restaurant "Romanoff's" in Beverly Hills. The restaurant was popular for its chocolate souffles, and was frequented by many celebrities. It closed its doors in 1962.

Description:
Tony Cornero on his newly refurbished gambling ship, the Bunker Hill (also known as the Lux), which was meant to operate offshore of Los Angeles. After the Bunker Hill’s opening night, however, Cornero and five of his aides were arrested on felony charges of criminal conspiracy to conduct gambling games and serve alcohol without a license. After his arrest, Cornero announced that he was ready to go to the United States Supreme court to keep the Bunker Hill running. Cornero was also “admiral” of the Rex, another gambling vessel which was forced to suspend operations in 1938.

Young Los Angelino Yvonne Marion Wolff sits piled under produce grown in a local community garden.Beginning in 1933, small tracts of land throughout Los Angeles county were used by the government as locations for community gardens, where men left unemployed by the Great Depression could work and grow food to feed their families. In 1933, 890 acres of land in Los Angeles County were used toward this purpose; the program expanded to 2,500 acres of land in 1934. This land was approximately enough to grow the vegetables consumed by 20,000 county welfare families.
