Description:
Cowboy film extra Jerome "Blackjack" Ward talks to police during a re-enactment of his confrontation with fellow extra John Ainsworth Tyacke a.k.a. Johnny Tyke. Blackjack fatally shot Tyke with a .45 in Gower Gulch, the name given to the area near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Gower Street where film extras hang out waiting for work. Ward entered a plea of not guilty based on self defense and temporary insanity. He was ultimately set free after many witnesses attested to Tyke's violent nature.

Albert Dyer on trial for the murder of three Inglewood girls, Los Angeles, August 1937

Description:
Albert Dyer, a 32 year old W.P.A crossing guard who confessed to the murders of three Inglewood girls, at his trial. Dyer admitted to luring the girls; Madeline Everett (9), Melba Everett (7), and Jeanette Stephens (8) into the woods on the pretense of helping them catch rabbits and then strangled them in succession. Extra deputy sheriffs were on guard outside the trial to control the crowds of angry and thrill-seeking people they expected would come to witness the trial of this heinous crime. Dyer was sentenced to death after the jury's two day debate. On September 16, 1938 at San Quentin Prison, Dyer was one of the last people to be hung in the state of California

Another Grand Jury member, Harry L. Ferguson, as well as Clinton's lawyer A. Brigham Rose and his legal secretary Pauline Huff, were all additionally cited for contempt. The charges were dismissed on December 1, 1937, on the technicality that the Grand Jury lacked the authority to issue the citation.

Ex-convict Peter Pianezzi (left) and his lawyer Nathan Freedman at one of two trials where Pianezzi is charged with the murders of gambler George (Les) Bruneman and Frank A. Greuzard. Allegedly, Pianezzi shot Bruneman 16 times in a cafe and then shot cafe employee Greuzard as he tried to take down the license plate of Pianezzi's car. The murder of Bruneman, which occurred on October 25, 1937, is thought to have been gang-related. The first trial ended with a hung jury, 9-3 for the acquittal of Pianezzi. In the second trial, Pianezzi received a life sentence for the murders. Later, at age 80, Pianezzi received a pardon based on innocence.

Dr. George K. Dazey (far left) and his third wife, Dorcas Dazey (center), at the trial in which Dr. Dazey is accused of murdering his second wife, actress Doris S. Dazey, in 1935. Doris Dazey's death was originally believed to be suicide by monoxide poisoning. However, witnesses claimed that Dr. Dazey had been boasting about committing the "perfect crime" and a night watchman testified to witnessing Dazey carry a woman's body from the house to the garage on the night of the murder. Other factors complicating the trial were the paternity of Doris and George Dazey's child, Doris Dazey's possible mental illness, and false testimonies from some of the witnesses. Dr. Dazey was ultimately acquitted of the crime.

Mrs. Antibus sued Mr. Warner after her home was raided by Buron Fitts and several of his deputies at the request of Mr. Warner. The raid of Mrs. Antibus' home was conducted in order to search for Mr. Warner's son, Thomas W. Warner, Jr. Mr. Warner, Jr. was found hiding inside the home with his girlfriend Mrs. Jean MacDonald. Rose Pianezzi with her son Peter Pianezzi's lawyer, Nathan Freedman at a trial where Peter Pianezzi is charged with two murders. Rose Pianezzi was a witness on her son's behalf. Allegedly, ex-convict Peter Pianezzi shot gambler George (Les) Bruneman 16 times in a cafe and then fatally shot cafe employee Frank A. Greuzard when he attempted to take down Pianezzi's license plate number. The murder, which occurred October 25, 1937, is thought to have been gang-related. The first trial ended with a hung jury, 9-3 for the acquittal of Pianezzi. In the second trial, Pianezzi received a life sentence for the murders. Later, at age 80, Pianezzi was pardoned based on innocence.

Witness Mrs. Adelaide Merritt enters the murder trial for Dr. George K. Dazey who was accused of murdering his wife. Mrs. Dazey was found dead as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning and her death was originally ruled a suicide. However, Dr. Dazey was later indicted by a county grand jury for the murder of his wife. Dr. Dazey was eventually acquitted of the charge of slaying his wife.

Clifford E. Clinton, Los Angeles restaurateur and philanthropist, appears in court beside his wife Nelda Clinton. At the time of this photo, Clinton was a member of the Los Angeles County Grand Jury. He was cited for contempt of court for attempting to present the findings of his "Citizens' Independent Vice Investigating Committee (CIVIC)" before the Grand Jury, while refusing to name his sources or clarify what case he was attempting to present. Another Grand Jury member, Harry L. Ferguson, as well as Clinton's lawyer A. Brigham Rose and his legal secretary Pauline Huff, were all additionally cited for contempt. The charges were dismissed on December 1, 1937, on the technicality that the Grand Jury lacked the authority to issue the citation.

She is accused of performing immoral acts with her husband, Reverend Joseph Jeffers, in front of guests in their home. Mrs. Jeffers claimed that on the night of her arrest she was drugged by neighbor Vincent Higgins, a District Attorney’s detective, and didn’t remember the events that were supposed to have taken place. A film reviewed by the prosecution showed Reverend and Mrs. Jeffers disrobing in front of their guests. Behind Mrs. Jeffers is a floor plan of her home, which she described for the jury.
