Description:
Stunt pilot and entrepreneur Paul Mantz poses with one of his airplanes. Mantz received his pilot's license in 1926 while serving with the Army Air Services, after which he pursued a career as a motion pictures stunt pilot, air racing pilot, film aviation consultant, and manager of "United Air Services" and "Paul Mantz Air Services," which contracted pilots and airplanes for the film industry. Paul Mantz also taught pilots, including notable student Amelia Earhart, whom he accompanied on her first (unsuccessful) attempt at flying around the globe.This photograph was likely taken during Mantz's divorce trial from his first wife, Myrtle L. Mantz (nee Harvey), a fellow aviator and former student. They were married in 1932 and divorced in 1936. A "Mrs. Putnam" was named during the divorce hearing, a likely reference to Earhart, who was married to George Palmer Putnam, publisher.

Description:
Portrait of aviator Myrtle L. Mantz, nee Harvey, likely taken during her divorce from film stunt pilot and consultant Paul Mantz. Mrs. Mantz was a former flight student of her husband's. They were married in 1932. Their divorce hearing attracted public attention when a "Mrs. Putnam" was named during the divorce hearing, a likely reference to Amelia Earhart, who was married to George Palmer Putnam, publisher. Both Earhart and her husband were friends of Myrtle and Paul Mantz, and Earhart was tutored by Paul Mantz on long distance aviation and navigation. The Mantzes were granted a divorce on June 28, 1936.

Description:
Horses race out of the gate at a $50,000 Derby day at the Santa Anita racetrack on February 22, 1937. The crowd in attendance was estimated at 45,000 spectators. Twenty-three horses raced that day, beating out the Kentucky Derby's record of twenty-two starting horses at that time. The $50,000 purse was won by the horse Fairy Hill.

Description:
Police and strikers during the Conference of Studio Unions strike against all Hollywood studios. The CSU strike began in March 1945 and was around the six month mark when it turned violent on October 5, 1945, known as Hollywood Black Friday. National exposure of this violence forced negotiations between studios and the CSU. Negotiation ended the strike about a month later, but CSU didn't last much longer and was eventually disbanded and absorbed by rival union IATSE.

Actress Bebe Daniels on the witness stand during a trial for 36-year-old war veteran Albert F. Holland. Holland's sanity was questioned after he wrote more than 150 love letters to Daniels and claimed to have married her in Mexico. During the case, Holland ran most of his own defense, including a lengthy cross-examination of Daniel’s husband, actor Ben Lyon. The jury ultimately found Holland to be insane and committed him to the state hospital.

Cowboy extras Joe Phillips and Harry Willingham at an inquest for Jerome (Blackjack) Ward, who is charged with the murder of Johnny Tyke in “Gower Gulch.” Gower Gulch is the name given to the area near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Gower Street where film extras hang out waiting for work; many of the nearby studios produce westerns so often actual working cowboys come here to break into the film business. Allegedly, Blackjack shot Tyke with a .45, but many of the hundreds of Gower Gulch extras who came to the inquest testified that Tyke had started the fight and was “doped up” at the time.

Description:
Casino on Tony Cornero’s newly refurbished gambling ship, the Bunker Hill (also known as the Lux), which was meant to operate offshore of Los Angeles. After the Bunker Hill’s opening night, however, Cornero and five of his aides were arrested on felony charges of criminal conspiracy to conduct gambling games and serve alcohol without a license. After his arrest, Cornero announced that he was ready to go to the United States Supreme court to keep the Bunker Hill running. Cornero was also “admiral” of the Rex, another gambling vessel which was forced to suspend operations in 1938.
