Will Rogers Commemorative float at the Tournament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, 1936

Description:
A tribute to Will Rogers, following his death the previous year, at the 1936 Tournament of Roses Parade, surrounded by an unknown number of spectators. A tribute by the Union Oil Company, the float depicts a riderless horse in front of a large star to represent Rogers's career. The float won the grand prize award for the parade.

Prize-winning parade float featuring women in costume representing one of the "Big Five" nations: the United States, England, France, China, and Russia. The float was sponsored by the International Association of Machinists, District Lodge 727, and engineers from the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. The float was used in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade in 1946. The women in the photograph are from left to right: Sherry Purkiser, Miss Russia; Ronnie Baukand, Miss China; Marjorie Hemmingway, Miss United States; Patricia Kubelka, Miss France; and Jeanne Gilliland, Miss England.

"Little America" float in the Toutnament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, 1934

Description:
The first base was established in 1929, while the last, Little America V, was established in 1956 at Kainan Bay. Little America II was established in 1934, and during the 1934-1935 expedition, many souvenir letters were sent from Little America, using a commemorative postage stamp issued by the U.S. government. Glendale's float received a special award, a consolation prize after the float's entry having been delayed en route to the parade.

The "A Sea of Sand" float was preceded by 4 thoroughbred Arabian horses and two camels, "ships of the desert." In addition to its title, the float also bears the floral sign "The Dessert Playground." A woman in a bathing suit stands on the float, braving the rain. The float was entered by the city of Palm Springs. The float is seen is seen passing the Goodhue Flagpole in the center of the intersection of Orange Grove Blvd. and Colorado Blvd.

The float features a carriage lead by dragons with Lili Arikawa seated on a throne as the empress with 2 girls seated below her, hanging baskets and lanterns, and with 'Long Beach' written on top. Atop the globe is a uniformed man with "Adore" (probably for Adore Dairy) written on the back of his shirt. The float is on a reidential street, probably Orange Grove Blvd.

Sherman Institute float in the Tournament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, 1928

Description:
Float sponsored by the Sherman Institute, an off-reservation boarding school for Native American students. Now called the Sherman Indian High School, it opened in 1892 as the Perris Indian School and later changed its name to the Sherman Institute. On the right are four Native American students beside a decorative tepee. On the left are four Native American students dressed to represent trades taught at the school, with one young woman dressed as a nurse and one young man wearing a smock. Students identified in the newspaper article include Charles Bautista, Adelia Brown, Pearl Beuis, Samuel Cachora, Adolph Sambo Pahvitse, Elsie Sasalque, and Jose Tajete. The float is at the intersection of Orange Grove and Colorado Boulevard. Reported in "FLOATS TELL PEACE STORY: League of Nations Theme Carried Out by Chain of Masterpieces Done in Flowers," Los Angeles Times, 03 Jan. 1928: A1.
