Military personnel (one in a diving suit) clink bottles during the Army-Navy Maneuvers that took place off the coast of Southern California at the end of 1946. The goal of the war games was to practice two maneuvers: Operation Mountain Goat, an amphibious landing designed to dislodge "enemy" troops, and Operation Oilskin, a landing to cut off "enemy" communications. The Army, Navy, and Marine Corps aircrafts participated in the exercise.

Admiral William F. Halsey waves farewell aboard the U.S.S. South Dakota during his retirement ceremony, Los Angeles, 1945

Description:
Admiral William F. Halsey ended his 45-year naval career aboard the U.S.S. South Dakota in the Los Angeles Harbor. He commanded the Third Fleet during the Pacific War against Japan. The ceremony consisted of the changing of his four-starred flag to the two-starred flag of his successor, Rear-Admiral Howard F. Kingman. The ship's entire company was present during the brief ceremony. After the ceremony, Halsey left the battleship on a crash boat and the U.S.S. South Dakota fired a 17-gun salute.
