Description:
Cowboy extra Tex Driscoll at an inquest for Jerome (Blackjack) Ward, who is charged with the murder of Johnny Tyke in “Gower Gulch.” Gower Gulch is the name given to the area near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Gower Street where film extras hang out waiting for work; many of the nearby studios produce westerns so often actual working cowboys come here to break into the film business. Allegedly, Blackjack shot Tyke with a .45, but many of the hundreds of Gower Gulch extras who came to the inquest testified that Tyke had started the fight and was “doped up” at the time.

West testifies at grand jury hearings to determine Todd’s cause of death. Todd was found in the garage of film director West, her business partner and lover, dead from carbon monoxide poisoning. Nance was Los Angeles Country Coroner 1921-1945. Todd's death was eventually ruled an accident.

Taken at grand jury investigation into death of film actress Thelma Todd. Todd was found in the garage of film director West, her business partner and lover, dead from carbon monoxide poisoning. Schafer was the manager of a roadside cafe owned by West and Todd. Anderson was a bartender at the café. Whitehead was Todd’s personal maid. Todd's death was eventually ruled an accident.

Prima ballerina Mia Slavenska in costume for "Ghost Town." The ballet was written by Marc Platoff and performed as part of the Ballet Russe at the Philharmonic Auditorium. Slavenska (1916-2002) was a Croatian-born ballerina who became the prima ballerina of the Metropolitan Opera Ballet in 1954. She taught ballet at CalArts and University of California, Los Angeles.

"Prince" Michael Romanoff, popular Hollywood pretender to Russian royal blood, Los Angeles, 1934 (?)

Description:
A photograph of "Prince" (not, as captioned here, "Grand Duke") Michael Romanoff, a Hollywood restaurateur and actor, who claimed to be a member of the Russian royal family. This claim was widely known to be false; however, Romanoff kept up the deception throughout his life in Los Angeles.Romanoff was born Hershel Geguzin in Lithuania. He traveled extensively before settling in Los Angeles and into the role of Michael Romanoff. In Hollywood, he acted on stage and in film, but was perhaps most successful as the owner of the restaurant "Romanoff's" in Beverly Hills. The restaurant was popular for its chocolate souffles, and was frequented by many celebrities. It closed its doors in 1962.

Description:
Young actress Ada Williams Ince, 21, divorces her husband of 5 years, William "W.T." Ince, on claims of abuse due to her husband's violent temper. Williams was granted the divorce in Superior Judge Edmond's court, and attributed it to the date of Friday the 13th, her "lucky number", contrary to popular convention.

The film showed Cook (right) re-enacting his murder of dancer Anya Sosoyeva, who he hit on the head with a 2x4. Cook willingly confessed to the murder, as well as the assaults of two other women, Delia Bogard and Myrtle Wagner. This was the first time sound motion pictures were used during a trial in California history. The trial was also considered very unusual because Cook never denied the murder, personally offer a not guilty plea, or put up any defense. Cook was sentenced to death and executed in the San Quentin gas chamber on January 31, 1941, at age 21

Playwright Mark Linder who brought a $1,000,000 damages suit against actress Mae West. Linder claimed West didn’t deliver on their agreement to split the profits of his play "Diamond Lil," which West sold to Paramount to be made into the picture "She Done Him Wrong.” West eventually won the suit because there was a lack of evidence corroborating Linder's claims.

Studio employees drinking coffee during the Conference of Studio Unions strike against all Hollywood studios. The CSU strike began in March 1945 and was around the six month mark when it turned violent on October 5, 1945, known as Hollywood Black Friday. National exposure of this violence forced negotiations between studios and the CSU. Negotiation ended the strike about a month later, but CSU didn't last much longer and was eventually disbanded and absorbed by rival union IATSE.
