Description:
Female spectator uses binoculars to view court proceedings during the trial of Police Captain Earle E. Kynette. Captain of Police Earle E. Kynette was charged with conspiracy to commit murder after the vehicle of Harry J. Raymond was bombed on January 14, 1938. Kynette was in charge of a special police intelligence unit that had been conducting surveillance on Raymond’s home from a nearby bungalow. Before the car bombing, Raymond had been conducting investigative work on Mayor Shaw and his possible connections with illegal gambling. Two other officers, Fred Browne and Roy J. Allen, connected with the intelligence unit were also charged with conspiracy to commit murder. However, Fred Browne was eventually acquitted. Kynette and Allen were both found guilty.

Fellow firefighter attends to Capt. Noble Swanson who was injured when a section of roof caved in during a fire at the Melody Lane Café on Wilshire Blvd. The fire began in the roof of the Melody Lane kitchen and high winds swept the blaze through neighboring businesses including the Pig’n Whistle candy and pastry shop, Randall Optometrist, McKiernan’s Fashions, Horton & Converse Pharmacy and Staber’s Beauty Salon. Noble suffered a back sprain, bruises and cuts. No one else was injured but total damage was estimated to exceed $200,000.

Elysian Park landslide, Los Angeles, November 1937

Description:
Landslide aftermath in Elysian Park. The landslide started near the top of Buena Vista Peak as a small crack in the earth. The crack began separating at a rate of about half an inch every 24 hours, then became a meandering zig-zag, and finally a landslide on November 26, 1937. During the landslide 1,500,000 tons of loose rock and dirt tumbled down the hill and onto a 600 foot stretch of Riverside Drive. The disaster caused rerouting of traffic and attracted thousands of spectators. Because the initial crack was identified early, damage and injuries were largely avoided

The fire was fed by leaking gasoline and threatened at least five terminals in the harbor. At least 22 were injured and 9, possibly 12, people were killed. Damage was estimated at $10,000,000.

Wright confessed to shooting the pair in a fit of "white hot rage" after finding them in an embrace in his home. After the inquest, complaints were signed against Wright for the two deaths. A trial, called the "white flame" trial by the press, followed in which Wright was eventually let off on an insanity plea, thanks to his lawyer Jerry Giesler.

The fire was fed by leaking gasoline and threatened at least five terminals in the harbor. At least 22 were injured and 9, possibly 12, people were killed. Damage was estimated at $10,000,000.

In September she was sentenced to a year in county jail and forced to pay a settlement to Jean and Josephine Rose for injuring them in a hit-and-run car accident, during which Armour was under the influence of alcohol.

Noble suffered a back sprain, bruises and cuts. No one else was injured but total damage was estimated to exceed $200,000.

Twenty-one Boy Scouts and three leaders from Troop 47 in Los Angeles drinking hot chocolate after being marooned overnight on a bluff 1000 feet above the canyon floor in the Upper Arroyo Seco Canyon. The scouts became lost on their way back during a seven mile hike between Switzer's Camp and Oake Wilde. The troop lit matches to signal a rescue party of parents, deputy sheriffs, and county prisoners. One of the leaders, David Swaim, suffered a minor heart attack two miles from camp so the scouts carried him the rest of the way on a stretcher.
