Clifford E. Clinton, Los Angeles restaurateur and philanthropist, appears in court beside his wife Nelda Clinton. At the time of this photo, Clinton was a member of the Los Angeles County Grand Jury. He was cited for contempt of court for attempting to present the findings of his "Citizens' Independent Vice Investigating Committee (CIVIC)" before the Grand Jury, while refusing to name his sources or clarify what case he was attempting to present. Another Grand Jury member, Harry L. Ferguson, as well as Clinton's lawyer A. Brigham Rose and his legal secretary Pauline Huff, were all additionally cited for contempt. The charges were dismissed on December 1, 1937, on the technicality that the Grand Jury lacked the authority to issue the citation.

Supervisors John Anson Ford and Harry M. Baine shake hands and exchange a flower. John Anson Ford was elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors from 1934-1958. He was a member of the state Democratic Central Committee in the 1940's and 1950's. In 1976, the County of Los Angeles named a performing arts theatre the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in honor of the county supervisor. Harry M. Baine served as a Los Angeles County Supervisor and was a prominent businessman who built the Baine Building on Hollywood Blvd.

Mortgage broker Jacob Goldstein, accused of murder, Los Angeles, 1927

Description:
In August of 1927, the wealthy President of the Rothschild Mortgage and Finance Company, Jacob Goldstein, was charged with murdering his business associate Frederick A. Stern. Goldstein initially claimed to have killed Stern in self defense, but eventually pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter, and was sent to San Quentin prison. He was paroled in 1933, and left California for New York.

Earle C. Anthony (right) was an American businessman and philanthropist who worked in broadcasting and automobiles. He worked as the sole Californian distributor of Packard cars. The person identified as "Ralph" on the negative sleeve is probably Earle C. Anthony Co.'s general sales manager Ralph E. Macduff. The two were reported on in "Four-Month Car Output Mark Falls: Unprecedented Number of Autos Produced Keep Factory Busy," Los Angeles Times, 13 May, 1928: G5.

Description:
Louis D. Beaumont co-founded the May Company Department Stores. He was called "Commodore" because of his affinity for yachting. He started a general store in Colorado with his two brothers, later joining brother-in-law David May to form the May Shoe and Clothing Co., predecessor of the nationwide May Department Store chain. He retired from the May Co. in 1912 but remained a vice-president until his death. Beaumont's visit to Los Angeles was reported on in "David May To Be Here for Winter: Merchant Who Controls Hamburger's is One of World's Leaders," Los Angeles Times, 21 Nov. 1923: II6.
