"Rattlesnake" murderer Robert S. James on his way to court while handcuffed to an unidentified man. James had tied down his pregnant fifth wife and forced a rattlesnake to bite her, and then later drowned her in their fish pond. He was supposedly helped by his friend, ex-sailor Charles H. Hope, who was also charged with murder.

Description:
Stunt pilot and entrepreneur Paul Mantz poses with one of his airplanes. Mantz received his pilot's license in 1926 while serving with the Army Air Services, after which he pursued a career as a motion pictures stunt pilot, air racing pilot, film aviation consultant, and manager of "United Air Services" and "Paul Mantz Air Services," which contracted pilots and airplanes for the film industry. Paul Mantz also taught pilots, including notable student Amelia Earhart, whom he accompanied on her first (unsuccessful) attempt at flying around the globe.This photograph was likely taken during Mantz's divorce trial from his first wife, Myrtle L. Mantz (nee Harvey), a fellow aviator and former student. They were married in 1932 and divorced in 1936. A "Mrs. Putnam" was named during the divorce hearing, a likely reference to Earhart, who was married to George Palmer Putnam, publisher.

Description:
Portrait of aviator Myrtle L. Mantz, nee Harvey, likely taken during her divorce from film stunt pilot and consultant Paul Mantz. Mrs. Mantz was a former flight student of her husband's. They were married in 1932. Their divorce hearing attracted public attention when a "Mrs. Putnam" was named during the divorce hearing, a likely reference to Amelia Earhart, who was married to George Palmer Putnam, publisher. Both Earhart and her husband were friends of Myrtle and Paul Mantz, and Earhart was tutored by Paul Mantz on long distance aviation and navigation. The Mantzes were granted a divorce on June 28, 1936.

Police Captain Earle E. Kynette, Officer Roy J. Allen, and Officer Fred A. Browne stand in court after being charged with conspiracy to commit murder, Los Angeles, 1938

Description:
Kynette can be seen wearing a tie with dots. Officer Allen stands next to Kynette with his hand on his face. Officer Browne can be seen in the background standing behind both Allen and Kynette. Captain of Police Earle E. Kynette was charged with conspiracy to commit murder after the vehicle of Harry J. Raymond was bombed on January 14, 1938. Kynette was in charge of a special police intelligence unit that had been conducting surveillance on Raymond’s home from a nearby bungalow. Before the car bombing, Raymond had been conducting investigative work on Mayor Shaw and his possible connections with illegal gambling. Two other officers, Fred Browne and Roy J. Allen, connected with the intelligence unit were also charged with conspiracy to commit murder. However, Fred Browne was eventually acquitted. Kynette and Allen were both found guilty.

Private detective Pearl Antibus testifies against millionaire Thomas W. Warner, Sr., Los Angeles, 1938

Description:
Mrs. Antibus sued Mr. Warner Sr. after her home was raided by Buron Fitts and several of his deputies at the request of Mr. Warner. The raid of Mrs. Antibus' home was conducted in order to search for Mr. Warner's son, Thomas W. Warner, Jr. Mr. Warner, Jr. was found hiding inside the home with his girlfriend Mrs. Jean MacDonald. The pair had been hiding in the home from Mr. Warner, Sr. who was opposed to their relationship and was seeking to end all contact between the pair. Mrs. Antibus served as a private detective for Mr. Warner, Jr. and had previously conducted an investigation into the life of Mrs. MacDonald in attempt to determine whether she was truly in love with Mr. Warner, Jr. Mrs. Antibus alleged that the raid left several of her visitors injured and was unnecessarily violent.
