Description:
Hundreds of people crowd a patio in downtown Los Angeles as they celebrate the New Year. The crowd occupies the majority of the image and are viewed from a bird's'-eye perspective. Most face towards the camera. Some men raise their hats in celebration. Square columns line the left and right sides of the confined space and an elaborate door stands in the background at center.

Lobby of the unfinished California State Building in downtown Los Angeles, early 1930s

Description:
The State Building was completed in 1931 at a cost of more than $2 million, and was dedicated the day before the opening of the 1932 Olympics. It occupied most of the block bounded by 1st & Temple Streets, and Spring and Broadway. The building sustained significant damage from the 1971 San Fernando earthquake, and was torn down in 1975 or 1976.

From front to back, S. F. "Nick" Carter and J. V. Anderson, police officers, pose with unclaimed items up for auction at the semi-annual police auction. S. F. Carter sits in a wheelchair, off-center to the left. He plays a guitar and appears to sing. Directly behind him, J. V. Carter smiles to camera while holding onto a camera. Beside the officers, a large table enters frame at right and extends back towards center. It is cluttered with unclaimed property. Typewriters, vacuum cleaners, shoes, cameras, clocks and tennis rackets are some of the items that sit atop the table. Purses and a pair of ice skates hang above the table at right. Luggage sits in a stack beneath the table.

Original Los Angeles County Courthouse with scaffolding, 1935

Description:
View from above of the original Los Angeles County Courthouse was built in 1891 on Poundcake Hill on the corner of Temple and Broadway in downtown Los Angeles. The Victorian-style red sandstone building was declared unsafe after a 1933 earthquake, and demolished in 1936. Standing next to it was the Hall of Records.

Description:
Photograph of building originally located at 135 S. Spring Street in downtown Los Angeles. First floor sign and awning identifies the storefront as The Big Pipe Store, established in 1882 at that location, and a sign in the window indicates that the store would be moving across the street to 112 S. Spring St in August. The proprietor's name (W. F. Ball) is partially visible on the awning. The store was also known as Ball Big Pipe Store, and later became Hugunin's, located at 406 S. Spring Street.
