Description:
Josie Shaw was Mertie Whitaker's sister. William Shaw was Josie's husband, and Lester and Romayne Shaw were their sons. Abraham and Mary Whitaker were Mertie and Josie's parents. Agnes Hawley later became Forrest Whitaker's wife. Mertie Whitaker became H. H. West's second wife in the 1920's.

It lounges atop the front side of a small round pool constructed of brick and concrete. The seal lies on its stomach with its head lifted towards the right; a flipper hangs off the side of the pool. The rest of the wooden enclosure is seen in the background. Just left-of-center there are large windows extending out of the top of the photograph.

Pinkie (Ellen Lorene) Lemberger stands on the pier in Santa Monica with her eyes closed and slightly turned to the left (facing east). She wears a long skirt, white blouse, dark jacket and a large dark hat. It appears to be windy as her skirt seems to billow in the wind. The photograph may have been taken at the end of the day; Pinkie casts a long shadow to the left of where she stands and the waves in the ocean seem to move towards the left as well. Behind her and to the left on the dock is a picnic basket. A pier support post is behind her on the left as well; it rises just over the level of the pier. In the distance on the left, the shoreline is barely visible.
