Description:
Photograph of Eldred L. Meyer and Ethel I. Begley, Grand Presidents of the Native Sons and Native Daughters of the Golden West, in the California Admission Day Parade. One man, wearing a driver’s cap and dark jacket, drives as Meyer and Begley (whose face is obscured by Meyer) ride in the back seat. Their parade car is encircled with garlands, banners and flags – including two American flags with thirteen stars, a stripped banner, and the standard for the Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West (hanging from the driver-side door). The standard incorporates an American flag and California flag crossed at center. The sign above the standard reads: “Grand Presidents: Eldred L. Meyer, Ethel I. Begley.” Crowds of spectators sit and stand in front of the Security First National Bank, formerly located on the corner of 4th St. and Santa Monica Blvd., across from the old City Hall building.

Cargo truck carrying a military brass band during the Armistice Day parade, Santa Monica, 1938

Description:
Photograph of a cargo truck carrying a military brass band during the Santa Monica Armistice Day parade. The men wear dress uniforms and helmets with insignias on the front. They read from sheet music mounted on their instruments. Printed on the passenger-side of the truck: "63rd CA. Btry. A." Printed on the door is the Unit's Coat of Arms - a shield with three winged projectiles, one and two counterchanged, above a scroll reading, "Amor Patriae" ("Love of Country"). Printed on the hood: "W-4772." In addition, a plate riveted to the truck's front grill reads: "Pvt. Chambles." The cargo truck rides side-by-side with a second truck also carrying a brass band. A partially covered truck carrying military personnel follows behind.

"Rigoletto" production with Ray Gagan and 2 others, John Adams Auditorium, Santa Monica, 1949

Description:
Ray Gagan as the Duke of Mantua with the characters of Sparafucile and his sister in a Santa Monica Civic Opera production of "Rigoletto" Gagan wears stockings and a doublet-inspired tunic with a small ruff at the neck and cuffs. Sparafucile and his sister wear Romani (Gypsy) costumes. He wears a white shirt and vest, a scarf covering his head. She wears a peasant blouse, beads, and a scarf around her hips over her long skirt, with a flower in her hair. The stage set is the interior of a dwelling with stucco walls, a curtained window and doors. A cloth-covered table and chairs complete the scenery.

Santa Monica City Hall, Santa Monica, 1939

Description:
This is a view of the historic Santa Monica City Hall looking east from the lawns on the side of the driveway leading up to it. The words "City Hall" can be seen etched over the grand entrance. Santa Monica City Hall is considered one of the best examples of the Public Works Administration (PWA) Moderne style of architecture, popularized by depression-era architects. This style is a combination of the Art deco and Art moderne styles, most often found in buildings financed by the federal government.

In the photograph are several art deco buildings, part of the Santa Monica Mall, home to Willis Business College [now defunct]. Also in the picture are several stores and signs reading, "Lido Cafe, open all night," "Hotel Apts Lido," "Railway Express Agency," "1451 Mabry Bedding & Rugs," "Singer Sewing Machine." In the background is a large sign for "H. C. Henshey Co." department Store. In the foreground to the right is a sign for "Standard Stations Inc. The Stop Sign for complete se[rvic]e. America['s fa]vorite Service Sta[tion] System."
