Pile driver and construction crew with work train on desert repairing a culvert, Palm Springs vicinity, 1899
- Description:
- A distant photograph of a railroad construction crew repairing a culvert on the tracks between Beaumont and Indio near Whitewater. Work cars sit on the tracks at center and extend to the right. A pile driver stands at the front of the cars left-of-center with workers standing around it. Beneath the pile driver, there appears to be a culvert that is being repaired. Dark smoke rises from a smokestack on the leftmost work car. A worker stands on the flat bed of the work car at right. Along the bottom edge of the flatbed work car, it reads, "S. P. 787." Along the side of the bed of the leftmost car, it reads, "S. P. PILE DRIVER [?]26." Planks of lumber lie next to the tracks in front of this car. Logs lie on the ground at left down from the tracks. It appears that a couple of the photographer's fingers may have entered the frame along the upper left edge.
