Altar cross at the Church of the Epiphany, Los Angeles, 1941

Description:
This is an image of the silver (?) altar cross at the Church of Epiphany in Los Angeles. It is decorated with a relief pattern of flowers and leaves, with the letters 'LHC' intertwined at the intersection. The cross was donated in memory of Arthur Merick Byam (1896). It cross stands on a three-tiered base, with each tier inscribed individually. The topmost tier reads, "To the Glory of GOD and in loving memory of," the middle tier reads, "Arthur Merick Byam, Aged 55." and the base tier quotes, "But God is good."

Photograph of performers in an outdoor production. The performers wear a variety of costumes and head coverings- tunics, coats and cloaks with caps and hats (including a robin hood-style hat with a feather). At foreground, two women are viewed sitting behind a divider that obscures them from the audience. One reads from a sheet of paper. A record player can be seen between them. The audience is seated in chairs on a grassy area surrounded by trees; a basketball backboard looms ahead of the trees in the image’s background.

Description:
Los Angeles Civic Grand Opera production of “La Traviata,” Act 1. Opera singer Nelda Scarsella portrays Violetta, wearing a tiered gown with lace trim and holding a feathered accoutrement. She walks away from a group of three men, including singer Gene Curtsinger (who portrays Alfredo Germont) at far right. She makes her way across the stage to an unidentified performer portraying Barone Dauphol (wearing a monocle and sash across his chest) and a second male. Additional cast members, wearing gowns and coattails, converse amongst themselves in the background. The setting is a salon in Violetta’s Parisian home. The set’s design and props reflect an opulent space, including curtained windows, upholstered chairs, and a chandelier hanging above a table set with a lace table cloth, candelabra, plates, and champagne goblets. Beyond the stage, a portion of the string section can be viewed in the orchestra pit at foreground.
