Description:
Photograph of Mertie West, taken as she exits the women's restroom at Lake Mead. Mertie is at center and adjusts her eyeglasses as she steps down to exit the restroom. The restroom extends to her right and is supported atop railway ties. It is made of wood and has a low-pitched roof, with 3 sets of double support beams, extends around the building. On the underside of the roof at right, wiring runs along the side of the structure. Multiple cars are parked in the near distance at left and a desert landscape with mountains occupy the background.

Description:
Photograph looking east down North Broadway (formerly Downey Avenue) and towards its intersection with Avenue 22 (formerly Truman Street). North Broadway spans the width of the foreground and as it stretches back, it curves towards the right. Cable car lines hover over the center of North Broadway. At left, two cars in partial view are parked along the street, facing towards the camera. Behind the cars, the domed building for "California Bank," stands at the street corner. Other business stretch behind and to the right of it along the left side of North Broadway. On the right side of the road, a "FURNITURE" business stands along the right edge of the image. Additional buildings stretch behind it. Two cars drive past the furniture store and away from the camera.

West stands to the right of the inscription with one hand in his pocket and the other holding a coat. The inscription reads, "It is fitting that the flag of our country should fly here in honor of those men who, inspired by a vision of lonely lands made fruitful, conceived this great work and of those others whose genius and labor made that vision a reality."

Dave Sickmon, who appears in an account of the 1853 Butler Train to Oregon, photograph copied in 1939

Description:
George Miller West travelled with the Butler (wagon) Train, (organized by the Butler family, members of the Disciples of Christ Church) from Monmouth, Illinois to Polk County, Oregon in 1853. West made the journey to mine in Oregon and California. He wrote a memoir relating incidents of crossing the plains to Oregon and his experiences in the goldfields of southern Oregon and northern California. The memoir was prepared in the form of a 49-page typescript by his son, H. H. West, who distributed the memoir to several libraries and archives, along with copied photographs of members of the Butler Train and one or two mining associates. The photographs were collected by H. H. West from about 1935 to 1942. Dave Sickmon is mentioned in the memoir.

Photograph looking north across North Broadway (formerly Downey Avenue) and towards the garage that stands in the lot of a former residence of George M. West and family. North Broadway stretches across the foreground on an upward angle from left to right. A cable car juts into the image from the left. Cars are parked along the far side of North Broadway and face left. A three-story building with bay windows stands along the left edge. Next to it, the street front for a garage stands left-of-center. A sign atop the building reads, "GARAGE Mobilgas Mobiloil." On the front of the building itself, signage reads, "NORTH [BR]O[AD]WAY," "GARAGE," "IGNITIO[N] BATTERY B[OD]Y & FENDER" "FENDER & BODY WORK," "NORTH [BROAD]WAY," and "RADI[...]." A couple of businesses extend to the right of the garage. Signage on those buildings reads, "RADIO [...]," "CABINET," "[...] DRY CLEANERS," and "[...] A. B. COHN & BRO. DIAMOND JEWELRY LOANS 4[??] W. [...] ST. [...] OVER 60 YEARS." Cable car lines crisscross above North Broadway and another building stands past an intersection at far right in the distance.
