In a show of support and solidarity, several hundred activists from around Northern California met at San Francisco’s Union Square. While singing and chanting, organizers also highlighted Sane Jaleh and Mohammad Mokhtari, two protesters who were killed during Iran’s February 14 demonstrations. An action table was also set up where participants could fill out anti-execution postcards to be mailed to the UN Human Rights Council members in Geneva and missions in New York. Over 500 postcards were signed urging the UN Human Rights Council to take immediate action and appoint a human rights monitor on Iran.
Global Day of Action for Iran was the first globally coordinated event organized by United4Iran, during which tens of thousands of people across a hundred cities came together in solidarity with the people of Iran. Activists came together to demand release of prisoners of conscience, an end to state-sponsored violence, and freedom of expression. The day received support from hundreds of prominent activists, academics, and artists.
In celebration of International Human Rights Day, on December 12, 2009 United4Iran facilitated 'Arts United 4 Iran', a day devoted to worldwide displays of musical, visual, and performing arts highlighting the issues of human rights in Iran. In San Francisco, men and women lined up to stand in front of a green backdrop to have their pictures taken in support of Majid Tavakoli. At a Literary Reading, sculptor Paula Slater unveiled a newly bronzed bust statue of Sohrab, aptly named “Freedom Warrior,” in addition to showcasing a previously made sculpture: a bronze bust of Neda titled “Angel of Freedom”. Later in the evening performances from a varied group, including from both Kurdish and Baha’i performers, followed the literary reading.
