Photograph looking towards the summit that rises beyond Sable Pass in Denali National Park and Preserve. Gravel-covered ground stretches across the foreground. A signpost stands beyond it in the near distance, left-of-center. It is viewed at an angle. Two signs are posted; they read, from the top down, "SABLE PASS," and "25 MILES SPEED LIMIT." Antlers decorate the post above and below the signs. Sable Pass stretches beyond the signs and into the distance. Snow-covered summits stand in the distance at right and in the far distance at left.

Mertie West stands in front of it, left-of-center, with her back to the camera. Steam rises from the spring and wafts towards the left. In the foreground at right, a signpost for the spring reads, "EMERALD POOL THE TEMPERATURE OF THIS POOL IS LOW ENOUGH TO PERMIT THE GROWTH OF A YELLOW TYPE OF HOT WATER ALGAE ON THE SIDES OF THE BOWL. THE NATURAL BLUE COLOR OF THE NEARLY PURE WATER BLENDS WITH THE YELLOW BACKGROUND TO PRODUCE THE BEAUTIFUL EMERALD-GREEN COLOR. THE TIMBERS IN THE BOTTOM WERE THROWN IN BY TOURISTS MANY YEARS AGO AND FLOATED ON THE SURFACE UNTIL THEY BECAME WATER-LOGGED AND SANK. THEY HAVE SINCE BECOME CEMENTED TO THE BOTTOM BY DEPOSITS OF GEYSERITE." A pine-covered hill- or mountainside rises on an upward across the background from left to right. A streak of white stretches across the image on an upward angle from the lower right corner towards the left.

Photograph of a horse pushing a Mt. Lowe Scenic Railway mule train trolley car along the tracks at Mount Lowe. People sit aboard a trolley that rides along the rails in the near distance at right. A horse, viewed from behind, is hitched to the near side of the trolley car and pushes the car along the tracks. The tracks start at center and curve to the right and out of frame. A sign on the roof of the trolley car reads, "Please Keep Away From HERBERT THE MULE He C???S No Petting." Two fairly identical signs stand at left on the trail. They read, "MT.LOWE Scenic Railway Mule Train ('Herbert' on Duty) ROUTE FROM INSPIRATION POINT TO PANORAMA POINT A WONDERFUL SCENIC TRIP THU EATON CANYON ABOUT 3 MILES TAKES 35 MINUTES FARE ROUND TRIP 35¢ CHILDREN 20¢ PERFECTLY SAFE NO GRADES DO NOT MISS IT THE MULE PUSHES THE CAR BOTH WAYS TO KEEP [???] THE DUST & TO UNOBSTRUCT THE VIEW O.M. & M. Photograph of H. H. West's Buick stopped along a road near the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. The road extends on a slight angle from the lower left and up towards the right. The Buick is parked in the near distance, right-of-center. It is viewed from the back end. Further down the road, a hut stands on the left side of the road. Signage on and around the structure reads, "LEWIS CABIN CAMP," "SINCLAIR," "LAST CHANCE FOR SINCLAIR," "[P]ENNSYLVANIA," and "POP." On the right side of the road, a couple of signs stand, and they read, "TOTEM CAFE The Most Unique Place In The West CURB SERVICE," and "GAS 23¢ SINCLA[IR]." Tall pines stand off to either side of the road and line it as it extends into the distance.

To the right of the women, a sign attached to a post rises from the hillside at right. Robot advertising for Alpha the Robot while walking through the California Pacific International Exposition near the Cafe of the World, San Diego, [about 1935]

Description:
According to the negative sleeve, the photographs in this group were taken in 1931. Key features of these images were nonexistent in 1931. Penguins were not exhibited at the San Diego Zoo until 1933. Alpha the Robot did not appear in the states until late 1934 and was a special attraction in San Diego during the California Pacific International Exposition (1935-1936). Based on this, it is most likely that the images were taken about 1935 during the exposition.
