- Established in 1881, the Los Angeles State Normal School was the teacher-training institution that, under the direction of Ernest C. Moore, became the Southern Branch of the University of California in 1919. The building in the photograph stood on the downtown location of the present-day Los Angeles Public Library. In 1914, the Los Angeles State Normal School relocated to a lager site on North Vermont Avenue.
