SWAHILI: Hili ni shairi kuhusu ziara ya Ustadh Mau nchini Ujerumani. Alikuwa amesafiri huko ili kuchambua na kutafsiri hati za kale na miswada ya ushairi iliyoandikwa kwa Kiswahili kwa khati za kiarabu. Ziara hii ilikuwa ya mradi ulioongozwa na profesa Clarissa Vierke. Profesa Vierke pamoja na mwenzake wa karibu Annachiara Raia walimchukua Ustadh Mau kutoka uwanja wa ndege na kumpa nguo za joto zaidi ili avae. Ustadh Mau anatoa shukurani zake kwa matendo haya ya wema na anamshukuru kila mtu aliyefanikisha kukaa kwake kwa mwezi mmoja nchini Ujerumani. Tazama pia shairi linalofanana na hili : umada_ms_00054, lenye kichwa "Kundi la Bwana Zahidi".<br>ENGLISH: This is a poem about Ustadh Mau's visit to Germany. He had travelled there to analyze and translate 18th-century Swahili manuscript poetry written down in Arabic script. The workshop was held at the University of Bayreuth , host by Prof. Clarissa Vierke with the help of Annachiara Raia. In this poem composed in Germany , Mau expresses his gratitude for the host generosity and thanks everyone who made his one-month stay in Germany worthwhile. Fatma rafiki yake Shadya alikua anaolewa hivyo akamuomba babake amuandikie shairi hili kumpa wasia kuhusu ndoa.<br>ENGLISH: This poem was written for a friend to Shadiya, the daughter to Ustadh Mau. Her friend Fatma was to get married. Therefore, Shadya requested this poem in order to give marriage advice to Fatma.

Jina la bi harusi lilikuwa Jueweriya na babake Soudi na mamake Khola waliomba shairi hili liandikwe na Ustadh Mau. Shairi hili linapeana ushauri wa ndoa kulingana na maadili ya Kiislamu.<br>ENGLISH: This poem was written by Ustadh Mau for the wedding of a friend's daughter. The bride's name was Jueweriya and her father Soudi and mother Khola requested this poem to be written by Ustadh Mau. The poem contains general marriage advice according to Islamic values.

SWAHILI: Shairi hili lililoandikwa na Ustadh Mau ni la Anas, na linamhusu Anas kupokea zawadi kutoka kwa wapenzi wake. Zawadi yenyewe ilikuwa kanzu, na Ustadh Mau anasisitiza jinsi kanzu ni sehemu ya urithi wa kitamaduni kwa jamii nyingi tofauti. Kuvaa kanzu pamoja na kofia inayolingana (kofia ndogo iliyotariziwa) ni njia maarufu ya uvaaji, haswa miongoni mwa Waislamu katika pwani ya Kenya. Ustadh Mau anabainisha kuwa vizazi vichanga vinaonekana kuweka thamani ndogo kwa kanzu. Anawataka vijana kutambua heshima inayoambatanishwa na kanzu na mtu akiivaa atatambuliwa kuwa ni binadamu anayeheshimika. Ustadh Mau pia anabainisha kuwa waandaaji bora wa kofia wanapatikana Lamu na kwamba ujuzi huu unapaswa kupitishwa kwa vizazi vijavyo.<br>ENGLISH: This poem written by Ustadh Mau is for Anas, and it is about Anas receiving a gift from his loved ones. The gift itself was a kanzu, and Ustadh Mau emphasizes how the kanzu is a part of cultural heritage for many different communities. Wearing a kanzu combined with a matching kofia (a small embroidered cap) is a popular way of dressing, especially so among Muslims along the coast of Kenya. Ustadh Mau notes that the younger generations seem to place less value on the kanzu. He urges young people to recognize the respect a kanzu carries and that a person wearing it will be identified as a respectable human in return. Ustadh Mau also notes that the best kofia makers are located in Lamu and that this skill should be passed on to future generations.

The poem expresses how much he misses her presence and how he feels sadness because of this distance. He describes how he realized how deep his love has become for her over time and urges her to come back quickly as he cannot contain his longing for her anymore.

SWAHILI: Ustadh Mau alitunga shairi hili kwa ajili ya binti yake Hannan. Shairi hilo linamhimiza asahau yaliyopita na kutazamia siku zijazo. Baba yake anamwomba asijitwike na mambo ya zamani kwa sababu hana uwezo wa kukabiliana nayo bali anamsihi ajiandae kwa maisha yajayo kwani atahitaji kuwa na ujasiri wa kukabiliana na yale yajayo.<br>ENGLISH: Ustadh Mau compossed this poem for his daughter Hannan. The poem encourages her to forget the past and to look forward to the future. Her father asks her not to burden herself with things of the past because she has no control over them but rather he urges her to prepare herself for the future since she will need to be bold to face what is to come.

SWAHILI: Shairi hili ni sehemu muhimu kuhusu mpango wa kujenga kiwanda cha kuzalisha umeme kwa kutumia makaa katika eneo la Manda kaunti ya Lamu na kampuni ya kibinafsi ya Amu Power yenye makao yake makuu jijini Nairobi. Mradi huo wa kinu cha umeme ulikataliwa na wengi, wakiwemo jamii za eneo hilo na wanaharakati wa mazingira kutoka Lamu, ambao waliwasilisha kesi mahakamani dhidi ya mradi huo. Mnamo Novemba 2020 hatimaye serikali ya Kenya ilighairi mradi huo, baada ya kujali sana asili ya Lamu kitaifa na kimataifa. Katika shairi hili, Ustadh Mau anasisitiza mambo yale yale ya wanaharakati, yaani kwamba matokeo ya mazingira yangeharibika sana. Pia anabainisha kuwa maisha ya wavuvi yatahatarishwa kwani viumbe vya baharini pia vinaweza kutishiwa na mradi huu. Anawataka watu kuwa makini na kukataa miradi hiyo ya uharibifu.<br>ENGLISH: This poem is a critical piece on the plan to build a coal-fired power plant in the Manda area of Lamu County by Amu Power Company, a private power generation company based in Nairobi. The power plant project was rejected by many, including local communities and environmental activists from Lamu, who filed a lawsuit against the project. In November 2020 the Kenyan government finally cancelled the project, after much national and international concern for Lamu's nature. In this poem, Ustadh Mau emphasizes the same points as the activists, namely that the consequences for the environment would be too destructive. He also notes that the livelihoods of fishermen will be jeopardized as marine life might also be threatened by this project. He urges people to be careful and to reject such destructive projects.
